Well I saw a little bit of Dragonball Z on TV when I was a kid. I remember something about installing a coffee machine on a spaceship.

Aside from a few cultural differences, I really don't see a difference between Japanese animation/comics and American animation/comics. I mean, a cartoon's a cartoon, and a comic's a comic. They come in all sorts of genres and art styles, so why so much separation in classification?

How can someone say "I don't like anime" then turn around and watch an American cartoon?

Japanese animation has a bigger focus on overarching stories and plots? They don't have seasons they have entire arcs. Anime is an entirely different storytelling medium from most western made animation.

@Steve Plenty of American cartoons have that too. And American comics are almost always in the middle of some long story arc.

Well, there's also the matter of style. It'll vary from work to work, but on the whole eastern and western cartoons and comics have different styles.

@Lurker Different animation styles, different storytelling styles etc. Anime is very different from western animation.
The Eleventh Doctor is cool.

Though I think the distinction in style is a lot more blurry nowadays.

It's like the difference between Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. To an outsider they might appear to be the same thing, but once you're at the control you start to pick up on the differences, and people will almost inevitably prefer one over the other.

Personally, I tend to find that I like anime more in general, but the few American cartoons I like I love. So it kind of balances out.

Ah, now that is going to be the subject of my second story in that 'verse. It'll be hinted at here, but it's more of a Hero of Another Story type deal.

Depending on what you're looking at.

Like I know a lot of people think that Avatar is practically anime because it has big eyes and an actual story arc, but what catches me are the little things—like how a lot of episodes are clearly driven by some clear-cut moral and the show tries hard to make sure obvious things are obvious (like how they have to point out that the one villain's fatal flaw is his lack of self control before Aang bases his entire tactic around it).

But again though, its a Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter comparison. To most people, its just mashing buttons either way.

@Moe

But no one is going to argue with you if you put Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter into the Fighting Game genre together. The only real difference that I can see is the Anime has little-to-no episodic content outside of filler (which is looked down upon), while western animation has plenty of shows that are purely episodic, as well as plenty of shows that are story driven. Animation style doesn't seem like enough for classification in my book, and it more seems like Japan is stuck in a smaller pool of available art styles compared to America, same as the storytelling styles.

I guess it all comes down to what you consider worthy of determining the classification. I, personally, don't think that country of origin should have anything to do with it. Most people disagree, though.

Heck, the Japanese don't even distinguish between them. To them, all animation is "anime".
