Because a flying leap looks cooler?

I like to imagine Equestria is actually some sort of horrifying dystopia where people are divided into rigid castes based on what they're capable of doing (with Unicorns at the top, obviously) and that Celestia uses her vast power to prevent any other forms of life (or even natural processes like the weather) within the kingdom to function properly without the aid of the Ponies, thus ensuring that all other sentient races (since nearly all the other animals are intelligent as well) remain subject to the Ponies.
So, Word Of God says that Ponies reproduce... well, let's just say "realistically". So let's say a Unicorn and a Pegasus fall in love. What is the child? Does it take after the mother? The father? Gender Equals Breed? Is that how we got the Princesses? Lots of questions.
Yes We Did.

Three schools of thought that I know of:
Some weird convoluted genetics that we're still trying to figure out.
Ponies of different kinds can't produce offspring. Different species, if you will.
It's magic, who cares how it works?

I'm sure that Celestia is not born from something as simple as crossbreeding of a unicorn and a pegasus. There also was a conversation on this topic some time ago, it mainly run on assumption that there is a gene switch of the breed: how it turns out depends on ancestry of both, but it is a rigid choice from three options with no mixes.

Hmm... I'd have supposed that the different breeds would result in hybrids, but it's entirely possible that the children take on personality aspects of the mum and physical aspects of the dad?
If that was the case, then it might explain why Sweetie Belle acts somewhat similar to Rarity (assuming Sweetie Belle is the daughter of Rarity's sister).
Aaaaaand new episode!
Someone's uploading parts to Youtube, but it's got bad framerate. I imagine there will be a lot of new Rainbow Dash screencaps from this episode...
After watching the most recent episode? Well, There's certainly no accounting for tastes, but I've always been of the opinion that it's a bad idea to start a show like this on a later episode, since it's character based humor and you need the context on the characters to reaaaly appreciate it. Though, I could easily be wrong about that.

Regarding the school systems, I wonder if they have separate schools for boys and girls. Snips and Snails weren't shown in Apple Bloom's school (far as I know) and I think they're about the same age.

I thought they might probably be about a grade older than Apple Bloom and the others.
Also, I was kinda bummed that this episode didn't give Fluttershy a full-length musical number. Ah well.

I'm actually quite excited for that season finale; given the amount of foreshadowing that's been going on throughout the season (well, relative to the fact that they wanna keep the series anachronic) I can tell Madame Faust and the writers are taking it seriously and it's probably going to be a whopper of an episode.

Celestia has a LOT of personality in this episode. Great all around.
I guessed pretty quickly that the bird was a phoenix - I think anyone who's read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and particularly seen the film version would recognize the symptoms. Though I was a bit thrown when she put the compress on its head and it looked deathly cold - I would have figured a phoenix would be burning hot no matter what.
I did think a bit weird in that one would think Fluttershy would know better than to just start trying random treatments on an animal that she doesn't even know what it is, other than some type of bird.
I agree that it was great to see more of Celestia.
