RE: Always Chaotic evil: I'm going to restate my position that I don't consider them to be really evil or good by our standards, but that they follow a different moral code entirely. The average changeling you meet is probably no different from the average pony, they just have a dishonest method of gathering food and don't look as pretty.

I never buy blue and orange morality.

So, I was rewatching the wedding episode and Chrysalis said that Equestria had more love than any other place she's encountered. Does this mean that the changelings have a kingdom and are they constantly invading other lands?

Edit: I like to believe that there are good changelings much like there are bad ones.

Point 1: They're functionally, biologically different from us. Blue and Orange morality is pretty much standard in such case. Point 2: we are out to harm everything by virtue of being omnivorous - we literally must kill things to stay alive. Point 3, the changelings are not out to hurt everything. Their method of feeding is actually considerably nicer than ours, since it actually requires the host to be happy.

I think that a fanfic of Snowcatcher should start something like this:

(The doors of the throne room burst open and apart. They splinter and char in the flames. A cloaked figure enters the room and the guards raise their spears at her. She throws back her hood to reveal our heroine.)

P: So you’ve arrived, Irreverant One. Lower your spears! I can handle a single, measly unicorn by myself!

S: I promised this day would come, Permafrost! This day, you pay for your crimes against poninity! This day is the day you fall!

P: Your arrogance knows no bounds, Irreverant One! You still fail to see that you are a lesser creature who can only gain meaning in serving me! But I shall show you the true meaning of power!

(Fires a beam of blue energy at the floor and sharp icicles sprout forth to impale Snowcatcher. Snowcatcher jumps forth and licks the icicles which instantly melt. Permafrost’s eyes widen in surprise.)

P: So, the stories about you are not as exaggerated as I believed.

S: When I was a foal, the others would mock my special talent. But I knew the truth. My tongue is the tongue which shall melt a path of destiny. This tongue is the tongue which shall defeat you!

P: Your arrogance knows no bounds, Irreverant One!

S: With my special talent, your powers of cold are useless! Surrender and release the pegasi and I’ll hoof you over to one more merciful than I!

(Her horn lights up with a flame and the ice covering the floor and walls melts. The guards fall over in the water. Permafrost rises into the air and flaps her wings and a gust of wind picks up Snowcatcher, throwing her against a wall.)

P: Insignificant foal! I am the Princess of Storms!

(Lightning begins flying from her horn.)

P: You think that I am limited to cold!? Thunderstorms grow from my will! Hurricanes pass where I will them! When I breathe, buildings shake! My wings give birth to tornados and waves buffet the shore at my command! Are you really stupid enough to challenge me, Irreverent One!?

This would be the MIDDLE of the fanfic in chronology. Snowcatcher has to learn that taking on an alicorn singlehoofedly, doesn’t work well.

As for changelings, I avoid Always Chaotic Evil where I think it can be avoided, so I'll say:

Most are evil. Some out there avoid draining to much love from a single pony to allow their prey to prosper.

@Chad: So setting aside the fact that I'm a pacifist, and only believe in violence as a last resort(It is literally trying to end me), and then only to the degree where I am able to run away, NEVER killing, no. I have no reason to want to kill them. They aren't hurting anybody. It's not like they feed on my fear or anger or sadness, they feed on my love. I wouldn't appreciate the dishonesty, and I likely wouldn't care for them, but I'd be more than willing to give them the chance if they wanted to be honest, and there would certainly be no reason to kill them.

For morality, I think it would be possible for there to be a good changeling, but Chrysalis is just evil.

Well let's see. They'd enslave you. You can take it or fight back. That's not blue and orange. For us it'd be grey and black, or grey and grey. For ponies, white and black.

How is that enslavement? I'm still free to go about my way - they'd encourage it! If they're forcing me to do things, I can't love them, and they can't feed. Oh sure, they'd want to keep me around, but they're going to have to work for that - work to make me love them.

Again, it is in the changelings best interests for their host to be happy. If anything, it's more a symbiotic relationship than a parasitic one. The only thing wrong about what they're doing is the dishonesty of it. If a changeling came to you as itself, tried to start a genuine relationship with you, and make you really, truly love it - it's doing the exact same thing it's always done, subsisting on your emotions. Is it still wrong? Still evil, just for being alive?

My question: how would the changeling feed after the barrier went down? I mean, Chrysalis was able to feed by cleverly duping Shining Armor. Now that the queen is exposed and her changelings are set loose, how would feeding on one's love work?

The queen said she'd takeover everything.

Judging by what was shown, simply be around someone overflowing with love.

The queen. Not the changelings. A single pony. Hardly representative of her entire race - hell, she's a monarch. Born to rule. We elect our leaders and they still don't represent us.

Even that aside, taking over everything could simply mean replacing Celestia in the government. She continues to rule the kingdom as normal at that point, because what the hell's the point in subjugating the ponies? That's just going to give her away. There's no reason for the changelings to enslave or harm the ponies, because then they wouldn't be able to feed.
