Not counting one moment in song there nothing in episode concentrated on her Alicorn status and her wings.

@Blue 1. That didn't come up much except for when Cadence flies across that gap or whatever. So not much of a change.

2. I'd like to get more backstory on alicorns, but I doubt we'll get some anytime soon.

I didn't even know Anastasia was supposed to be based on something until I was much older... (well, like 12, but still, the movie came out when I was 6 or 7)

Did you know that Anastasia and her family have been canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church?

She's literally a saint.

But Gregor Mendell is best saint!

Alright, elaboration a go: I'm gonna pretty much quote myself from last night. A lot of sci-fi/fantasy works tend to deal in a whole lot of exposition and info-dumps to characterize their settings. This tends to put the focus on the world while not putting enough focus on the characters and plot, creating a stale, inconsistent story. Other works, like MLP:FIM, develop their setting purely through direct evidence, relying on the viewers to infer further info about the setting. This both causes the viewers to become more engaged in the story and allows their imagination to fill in any accidental plot-holes, resulting in an over all better defined setting.

So basically, I don't think the show should ever pause the story and explain to us what it means to be a princess and where alicorns come from. We know what they are, we know what they do, that's all we need. We can fill in the rest ourselves.

Y'know, cuz I'm not familiar with a lot of history, I actually kinda like the Historical Villain Upgrade trope to an extent.

At least when it makes something as awesomely ridiculous as Rasputin from Anastasia [lol]

I had no strong feelings about her being an alicorn one way or the other. Why did you like it?

I like it because it's more consistent. Luna and Celestia are princesses, and they are both alicorns. Cadance is a princess. If she wasn't an alicorn, it would raise questions.

[up]Yeah, she was amusing.

Do you think this is the best episode to show to people in order to get them interested? I know someone who I'm sure would love it if you actually watched it, but she has absolutely no interest, apparently due to a beleif that it is just like the old generations.

I bet if they ever did try to explain the deal with alicorns, we'd only pick it apart till we found a flaw.

Also, I think it's just that the royal family are all alicorns, and Prince Blueblood just wasn't because he's a more distant relative and the product of a union with a commoner.

Bluth!Rasputin was a lot of fun.

The fact that he was voiced by Christopher Lloyd voiced him.

(I guess I should point out I found the main leads really annoying. Now, if the whole movie was about the Royal Judge. That would be interesting)

Yeah, I think the only think the show might have alluded to is that alicorns are born and/or they age at a similar/same rate as regular ponies. Evidence: Cadance ages from Twilight's imagine spot to the present day. I don't think alicorns are created from normal ponies anymore just because of that short scene.

The writers are really good.

@Bluespade: That's pretty much how I feel about it. There's no point in introducing a bunch of worldbuilding stuff that isn't going to have plot relevance.

Blueblood is a prince, but not an alicorn. I think that Prince/Princess is just a generic term for a number of different positions.

Rasputin may not have been evil, but he was a no-good charlatan. He had it coming.

@ storyyeller Only if you desperate. Better something from s1. From season 2 I think best is cider episode, because it funny to see ponies drinking beer like drink.

@story Sure, I guess. It's a bit sappy, but this has some of the best action so far. Although she'd have no idea what the buck is going on, I think anyone would enjoy this episode.

I agree with you for the most part, I just an't explain why

That's basically my point about subtle, shown world-building as opposed to info-dumps.

That's pretty much how I feel about it. There's no point in introducing a bunch of worldbuilding stuff that isn't going to have plot relevance.

I actually LOVE worldbuilding, I just prefer it to be done subtly. Hearts Warming Eve was one of my favorite episodes.
