It was awesome. But it was also heartwrenching.

And I really don't think that Love was the only thing they could feed off of. The Queen mentions that she wanted to control everypony.

If they can use any emotions, thy could probably keep them all locked up as essentially batteries.

But they let them have a little bit of hope, beause I imagine hope would taste better to them than fear

I'm thinking The Queen only had actual control over him when his eyes were glowing green, other then that maybe just some slight suggestive influence that increased his loyalty to her and made him less willing to listen to ponies talking against her.

Because Equestria is full of love and stuff. It was quite possible that they could overrun Canterlot that day, assume everyone's forms, and let life continue "as normal", and drain love from the rest of the land, because they don't know what happened.
