Believe it or not this is a subject I've run across several times in the fandom(Gelding tends to be fairly common in real life because stallions can be territorial, and gelding makes them considerably calmer). I've seen it portrayed as everything from an idle joke to a common enough practice(I recall reading a fic that noted gelding was fairly common in gay couples, which is both bizarrely pointless and offensive in that it implies all gay couples fall into a man/woman role), and it just struck as me as pointless and vaguely creepy in a sapient race. It's one thing if you want to suppress insticts, but when ponies display conscious behavior it makes the procedure pointless. why would you willingly remove that ability? What if you wanted to have children later? What if it turned out you like mares as well? what if you wanted to top occasionally? Even if you didn't, why remove the ability to feel the stimulation and to orgasm? It makes no sense.

About the question of how I got interested in the current MLP series, I actually wasn't really interested in it at first. I liked the other MLP stories from before but was still rather hesitant about this newest one. All I had read about it was about the pilot and I was uninterested in a story where an introverted bookworm was told to go make friends instead of study, since I assumed that it was going to imply that Twilight being smart and bookish was a bad thing. I also wasn't too fond of the idea of the moon goddess pony being evil, either. However, I read more about it on this site and read things that made it sound more interesting, like learning that Luna isn't really "evil." Also, the idea of having a main character who was bookish and introverted rather than outgoing intrigued me as well. The first episode I watched was Applebuck Season, and the comedy in it, particularly the part where the "baked bads" are made, got me to like the show a lot. I didn't watch the episodes in order the first time through, I skipped to ones that sounded more interesting to me first or ones that I saw were talked about a lot on this site.

I saw a horse being gelded once. There was blood everywhere but the procedure was fascinating. I still get a chuckle when I remember what the poor horse did as soon as he woke up... start eating. He was adorable ^^

And I've lost count on the number of neuters I've assisted in. I've watched or helped operate on at least 15 different sterilization procedures... I got desensitized to blood, which is good.

Anyway, in the Veterinary world, it's considered to be a wonderful idea to neuter/geld your animals. They really do get a lot calmer and have better behavior (I don't like Chihuahuas humping my leg...)

@Islemmr: From a veterinary standpoint I can understand it, it makes the animal more comfortable(It still bothers me a bit, but not for the obvious reason - I feel like it's vaguely unfair to deprive the animal the chance to have children). It's, you know, when applied to a sapient creature that I being to question it more seriously.

I didn't discover the stories until I knew at least a little German, which was after I could be severely traumatized by them.
