I wouldn't worry too much about party balance. So long as you're in character and having fun, the GM should be able to make your party work. Remember that the GM's goal isn't to win, but to lose in the most fun way possible.

Backstory is always relevant, or else I would just play a video game with pre-set personalities.

Any tips for coming up with backstory?
Start with a basic concept and grow your character from there, one detail at a time. Occasionally, you can invent a detail at random, and then try to connect it with what you already have. As your character gets more detailed, you may have to start pruning stuff that doesn't fit as nicely as it used to, but that's natural.

My current idea is a Pegasus, mostly because of a name I thought of...

I always tend to create reasonably detailed backstories, because I find it makes it easier to determine how they'd react.

@Turtle: <shakes fist>. Though having two bards could be fun. We could do a duet! One sings, the other plays an instrument.

My heads throbbing, nose os clogged, I'm completly exhausted, have only a few weeks to find somewhere new to live, or hope something good happens (though I may have one lined up) Work is backlogged..........But I has ponies so i'm happy.

OHHH talking about the RPG.....I've never done something like that...how would we do it? Also, I'll try if you will Ginger, I know nothing about these things...except what The Order of the Stick has taught me.

I think we should just have one party. It makes things a lot simpler.

I wonder what I could do when it comes time to fight though... politicians aren't exactly the most handy in a fight [lol]

Any chance there's a Druidic option?

@ Ginger, distract, backstab, use copious amounts of red tape to ensure the enemy takes 3 years to be able to move....

@Ginger stand back and talk the enemy to death or bore them to sleep with speeches.

I guess I could yell encouragements or attempt to parlay before the fighting begins...

I've heard of a Social Rogue before. No idea what it is. Could that fit Ginger?

Mines can fight.

Not by actually hitting of course. He either let's the machines do it, or cripples you by screwing around with time.

Ginger, I'm sure any half-competent bodyguard would try to ensure his employer could defend themselves to some extent. Encouragement and rhetoric could work as party-based buffs!

@ginger: A speech-heavy character can try to avoid a fight by charming the opponent. Doesn't work against monsters, but you can still talk your way through guards and the like.

@Kyler: Well.

Well, well, well.

I am okay with this.

So my backstory is something along the lines of, my character lived in a Town that was founded when the leader of a band of explorers had a turtle dropped on his head by a hawk who mistook his bald head for a rock (Yes I stole this from another story) and ended up having to stay a few days in a place to recover, during that time the party realized that it would be a great spot for a town.

Every summer the town holds a Founder's day celebration that involves a lot of turtle themed stuff. Just about everyone in the town has a turtle themed cutie mark of some sort. My character got caught cheating by greasing up her turtle for the turtle races and actually earned the cutie mark for it, which lead people to believe she got her cutie mark for cheating (thats not exactly the case though... I havent fully worked out that part of the story). She gets renamed based on her cutie mark and eventually leaves town but keeps the name to remind her of her past.

She eventually finds herself in the seedy underbelly of a larger city, and sets up a gambling den. She gets accused of fixing her games (someone finds out about her cutie mark story) and she gets run out of town... leaving her a bit of a wanderer at the moment.

Thats the short version [lol]

@Kegi she's more a charlattan/rogue sort, really not of the bardic persuasion I suppose. The bard Im most familiar with (The Elder Scrolls version) is more of an acrobat
