@Ginger: The main reason I didn't bring up Boast Busters was because Fluttershy and Pinkie do pretty much nothing in it, and there's a ton of emphasis on Trixie. I was trying to think of episodes that focus on the mane cast.

I just noticed on the character page the only trope listed under Doctor Whoof that doesn't have to do with, well, Doctor Who is Blue Eyes.

The guy had an entire scene of dialogue (two if you count Pegasus!Whoof), surely there are some things that apply to him that have to do with his actual appearance in the show.

...Maybe we need to name another pony trope. "I've Got Plenty of Apples"?

^My guess is that by the time anyone really saw what was happening, she was out of range of Celestia's telekinesis (

her sun-raising magic being something else entirely

), and Celestia's nowhere near as fast as the Wonderbolts or Dash. She could probably have teleported down, but that might present its own set of problems.

Why didn't Celestia try to save Rarity at any point during the young flyers competition?

I keep telling myself that Celestia must have some kind of precognitive power that lets her know that everything will turn out all right soon without her intervention, so when that kicks in, she kicks back and watches it unfold.

There could be other explanations too, like I think someone suggested that the magic Celestia uses every day drains her energy so much that it's dangerous for her to move around a lot. Or she's just really really old, and that's why.

I think it's the same reason that nobody else jumped in; the wonderbolts are literally the best of the best, so everyone assumed (correctly) that if there was an emergency, they'd take care of it. By the time Rarity K Oed them, only RD was close enough to make it in time.

But yeah, Celestia probably realized that things would be okay.

I had always assumed there had been some sort of arrangement ahead of time indicating that, in addition to serving as judges, the Wonderbolts would be responsible for safety if anything were to go wrong. (They are certainly the most qualified for it, after all.)

I figure even in Equestria you wouldn't put on what is basically a stunt show without making plans for what to do in case of an emergency.

Yeah, any other pony would have had to launch themselves and then build momentum. RD was already in prime position for a rescue.

Celestia can teleport though, she wouldn't need to fly. Red Savant said there'd be issues with her doing that, but I couldn't think of them.

I think I'll go with the, "she knew what was going to happen" theory

And even then, not even RD would have catched her if she hadn't made the sonic rainboom. Celestia (or anyone else for that matter) didn't knew RD was going to make a sonic rainboom...

I think what the deal with Twilight's teleportation is is that 'porting longer distances will cause her to feel disoriented, like in the pilot. Maybe?
