@ginger

In my opinion Brandon Sanderson should be avoided like the plague, not only for his piss poor writing abilities but also for his abhorrent personal views. -digression-

Artemis Fowl, is another good one I liked when I was younger, but it's Villain Protagonist so it might not be the best for you, Percy Jackson is pretty good and has no shortage of cool villains, but it's another YA one. I've heard good things about The Dragon Riders Of Pern, and The Bandlock Saints, but I haven't read them myself so I can't say.

Also don't let anyone put Eragon in your hands, and if they do burn it as quickly as humanly possible.

Ginger, I think you'd enjoy The Stars My Destination. it's well written, has strong characters, and it's only some 250 pages. The central character could also arguably called a villain protagonist.

@Mage: Abhorrent personal views? I have no idea what you mean; I just read the guy's books. (Also, I'll take Sanderson over Jordan's lifeless excuse for prose any day. tongue)

@L Mage Don't diss Eragon. That was the last Young Adult series that I bothered to finish after I stopped caring for them, and it's certainly a solid piece of literature. It just gets a lot of crap because the author is very young, and they made a terrible, terrible movie adaptation out of it.

@Red

Them's fightin' words red! >:)

And re: Brandon's views, he's openly homophobic at worst, bigoted and ignorant at best. And he writes with all the passion and vocabulary a brain dead four year old.

@Lurker

Eragon...My main issue was with how dirivtive the whole series was, and how much reading it at first felt like chewing ice.

So what's a good fantasy story I could read? Something uhhh...fantastic?

Being derivative is not a bad thing. If it was, then almost any High Fantasy novel written after Lord of the Rings would be awful.

@Mage: Huh... that could seriously put a damper on my enjoyment. =| Damn... You just ruined one of my favorite authors of all time for me. I'm gonna need a moment.

...Agh, no, I need to know how the Way of Kings ends...

@Chadaman: The Sentinel Mage, The Griffin Mage Trilogy, The Casting Stones Trilogy, The Sharing Knife series (4 books), Anno Dracula (urban fantasy, but very good), A Song Of Ice and Fire (less fantastical at first, but it gets there).

[down]The Sharing Knife....but it has a lot of romance in it.

Chad, could I recommend The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny? It is a ten novel series focusing on war and familial rivalry among the princes of Amber. The initial novel focuses on the third son of a seriously screwed-up family trying to reclaim his birth-right as well as revenge on the brother who left him for dead. What makes this different from most other fantasy is that the only "actual" reality is that of Amber, with our own reality and countless parallel worlds existing as shadows cast by Amber.

well, Sword isn't really that bad, it's just the weakest of everything he's written. There's still Word And Void, that's Urban fantasy. Can't really think of any non-fantasy series I know of that matches your criteria.

@JT: well I asked earlier if we still did a Skype thing on saturdays, but no one answered.

So I'll ask again! DO WE STILL DO A SKYPE THING ON SATURDAYS!? Cause I'm actually free tomorrow and I'm not particularly looking forward to this episode, so maybe skyping it will make it more interesting.

If not, I guess I'll check out these livestreams everyone talks about.

Sorry, for that. If it makes you feel any better he tends just to lean more towards "bigoted and ignorant" then "openly homophobic". He posted a essay on his site on the subject which most people (myself included) felt to be arrogant and condescending on the subject where it basically "Homosexuals aren't inherently evil, but if they do homosexual acts they are". He compared gay men in love to adultery and fornication.

It....No other series but The Wheel of Time could make me read words written by that man. :(

PONIES. YES, PONIES.

Anyway, I managed to work some ponies into a conversation with my bronette classmate today. She seems pretty nice, so I hope I can get to know her.
