@Blue Not sure... after ASOIAF, I'm wary of taking suggestions from people... but I have no other way of finding things.

So few people appreiate a good antagonist nowadays [lol]

@Blue

You're not wrong on the standard fantasy part, The Wheel of Time IS the ur-example of High Fantasy and at one point was described as Lord of the Rings on steroids and with more interesting characters.

If that's not your thing...Meh.

[up]

T.T, I take it you regret that we reced it to you?

@Ginger: I've got to admit, a lot of the things I really like don't have much of an antagonist. Even my finished novel has No Antagonist.

@Sky Strike: Oh yeah, sci-fi recommendation: Homestuck. Warning, it's very weird.

@Blue I don't really have the time to read Homestuck. I read Problem Sleuth in one day when I was home sick, but Homestuck is way longer.

I actually grew to despise the Wheel of Time series while reading it. Eventually I just stopped halfway through book 5, put it down, and never looked back.

@Mage I can't in good conscience say that I regret reading the series... but it CERTAINLY pisses me off quite a bit

@Red

Why? The Wheel of Time has some of, no, THE BEST, writing I have ever encountered.

@ginger

I think you might like Wheel of Time better, since there is less Grey and Grey Morality, the villains are badass and the heroes are good.

Sky, another scifi novel I'd suggest is Chasm City. While it is part of Alastair Reynold's Revelation Space series, it stand fairly well on it's own even if you aren't familiar with the background of the setting. It's also a intriguing mystery and revenge tale.

more @ Sky..if your into post apcolyptic stuff, read The Word And Void series by Terry Brooks, it's actaully Urban Fantasy, but the main chacater has vision of the future After the End which show him things he can do now to stop it. After the first Triology, it turns into a straight Post Apocolypitic series...that serves as a bridge to Shannara

now..@ Ginger shannara, ok the first book probably won't be up to your standards, but EVERYONE including the Author admit it's his weakest book and if you really wanted to it's easily skippable without missing much. But you will LOVE the villain in Elfstones, and Heritage.

Well I still have all the books I bought for school like The Great Gatsby, Othello, Hamlet, Uncle Tom's Cabin, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Crucible, Murder on the Orient Express and what not.

But they were tied to assignments and that didn't mix well with me.

You guys all suggest doorstoppers

That's because Door Stoppers tend to have the best villains, since they have the most development going in to them XD

Word and Void is pretty short, though the villain you'll definitely love isn't until the third book, first book's one you might like, not really sure, second one I don't think you will...but you might.

@Ginger: If you want my recommendations, you should really, really pick up Brandon Sanderson's Elantris, or really, anything by him. You want competent, intelligent, deep villains? Go for Mistborn, or perhaps Warbreaker. His new series is fan-fucking-tastic, but you'd best get started now - the first volume (of a planned ten!) is over a thousand pages long already.

@Chadaman Man, school assignments are the worst. My junior year I had to read The Awakening. The whole thing is pretty much dry, proto-feminist narration that managed to simultaneously bore and annoy me. Then we had to write an alternate ending to the story, meaning that I got fanfiction as homework. The worst part is that I think that alternate ending is the best thing I've written up until recently, despite the fact that I loathe the source material it's based on.

@ Lurker, alternate endings are easy, just have a sudden Gamma Burst hit the planet and instantly flash fry half of it, while slightly more slowly microwaving the other half.

@Ginger: Elantris is a standalone of maybe 250 pages. It's long, but it's hardly a doorstopper.

@Ginger What qualifies as a doorstopper to you? We kind of need to know that to narrow things down.
