You know how I once said that the "official" art style seems to be to make the ponies look all flat and pointy, and the animated series is like a deviation from that? Well, check out the toy commercials to see how that looks animated: Did Twilight Sparkle even have a forward-facing frame when she turned her head?

And let's not forget Princess Celestia—or her vapid, mis-colored decoy, whatever you think it is. I think she does more actual flying at the beginning of this commercial than I can remember her doing in the entire show.

There's also this one, which I don't know if there's an English version of yet, but it shows more of the characters moving around. But darn it, G3.5 commercials had this beautifully animated Pinkie Pie mugging alongside the children. Why couldn't the new Pinkie Pie do that? They should totally bring back Mermaid Ponies in the show by having Pinkie Pie blow magic dust on everyone to kick off an ocean adventure!

Celestia's vapid, miscolored decoy is a body double. Celestia doesn't want to disappoint children, but she can't stand around and say one of three phrases and do important state work at the same time, so she hires large pegasi who can pass for alicorns.

She's a Physical God yet she can't either:

A.) Find a better double

B.) Use her powers to make the person she got look more like her

Great answers, Red Savant. Today I've been going through the full-length Gen 3 movies to look for funny clips, and I'm noticing that they almost never have straight-on faces in those either. But sometimes ponies turn their heads so slowly that they have to have an in-between frame or two of it, and it can look really freaky, like they get all fat and have stretched-out mouths.

How many times does Celestia face the camera head on again? I remember she did at the end of Fall Weather Friends but were there any besides that?

also, does she ever even fly in the show itself? In The Best Night Ever, she seemed to be sort of... hopping but I'm not sure

I think Princess Celestia faces the camera briefly a few times when she appears in "The Elements of Harmony". Oh yeah, and I like how both the animation in that commercial and all the box art for Princess Celestia toys show her in her traditional white and gold colors, like they're saying "Yeah, we messed up the colors on the toy, and we dare you to care about it!"

Celestia did flew in felling pinkie Keen at the end of the episode.

I wanna know what she was even doing there in that ep. Her guards were nowhere to be seen, and I don't think she'd come over JUST to pick up that scroll.

I like to imagine that she was fighting someone, and got hit out of the sky by a lucky blow

Maybe, just maybe, Twilight if she were to receive any sort of phlebotinum that bought her raw magic. Come to think of it, anypony under an magically-enchancing phlebotinum... and Pinkie. (Although Rule of Funny would have to be in full effect.)

So unless a superpowered villain appears, I don't think there's anyone to challenge the princess head-to-head.

Someone could probably surprise her with a lucky shot, but that would require her to actually be over Ponyville at the time.
