@Ginger The whole point of Boast Busters was to be proud of your talents. The dam wasn't the primary conflict of the episode, and neither was the orchard.

That's not a Deus ex Machina. In Boast Busters we see her practicing some of the spells she uses on the Ursa at the end, and even then she was clearly struggling the whole way through to keep it up. What I'm saying is that her magic ability doesn't make her an overpowered character when it's balanced with all sorts of other flaws.

Also this. Both of those were just applications of telekinesis, and honestly I wouldn't be that surprised to learn that Rarity could duplicate something like the orchard; I mean in Suited For Success Rarity levitates half the crap in her shop. She just isn't as good as Twilight at it because she isn't practicing 24/7.

Also, when Twilight teleports the group, she's visibly exhausted for a moment (she collapses on the ground)

about the orchard: I am assuming you are referring to the apples in the end of Apple Buck Season? Considering that she has a spell that specifically grows mustaches, can we assume that she has a spell that allows her to move only apples in mass?

about the dam: I forget how large the dam was and how large the dam pieces were, but considering that she had a hard time holding up a water tank, I can understand where you get your objection from.

@JT I never said she was an overpowered character. I said she was overpowered. period.

Twi's high-powered magic is actually more exhausting to her than it should be because she's clearly burning more thaumage than normal unicorns, putting more stress on herself.

Seriously watch other unicorns use their magic without showing much tiredness (Rarity exhausting herself with long work hours is another thing entirely). Twi just casts one big spell, then she's worn out.

What's the difference?

I am LOVING this episode so far!

I suspect she might have a Lina Inverse appetite to counter the calorie burn of such strong magic. (Also Lina Inverse has a more... normal figure than all the freakishly hourglass-shaped Fantasy Land females, probably because her heavy spell spam burns that much energy.)

An overpowered character is overpowered in the context of the show.

A character who is merely overpowered has the ability to levitate Dams and orchards

I still don't see the difference. "Overpowered character" and "character who is overpowered" mean exactly the same thing.

And I have no clue how "levitating dams and orchards" = "overpowered". I'm missing a step in your thought process.

sigh, but you're right... I just hate it when it seems like Twi's powers could easily undermine the talents of the other characters

But they don't. There have only been a handful of cases where that happens. If she shows them up on a regular basis, yeah, but unless she's constantly rendering the rest of the cast useless (which she isn't), I'm not sure how that applies.

No, but that doesn't mean she's overpowered. No other pony can cause a Sonic Rainboom either, but that doesn't mean Rainbow Dash is overpowered.

This was probably my least favorite episode of the season. Don't know if I'll watch it again.

I'm not bothered by the mass teleport too much, the dragons were gaining on them and she botched the spell twice before succeeding.

I don't think I will either, I was pretty unimpressed.

In a world that is based on social interactions, not fighting, being "overpowered" is not a problem, unless she has social-interaction-solving abilities.

It's more that it honestly feels to me like she COULD

You've seen how catastrophic her Critical Failures can be (Animate Plough results in all their hard work undone in Winter Wrap-up, Want It Need It causes a significant Incident in Ponyville, failed teleport early in Season One manages to actually scorch Spike who is already proven to be extremely fire-resistant.)

With great spellcasting comes greatly catastrophic Spell Failure risks.
