Um, right. "talking to the cardboard dog" is a term among game designers - though I'm not sure how common it is, but I saw it in a "dev dictionary", so eh. In essence it means forcing someone to sit and listen to you talk about a problem you're having with something. They're not expected to contribute any more than the occasional grunt, their role is simply to sit and listen while you work the problem out on your own. So you're not just talking to yourself, really.

So a cardboard dog is sort of a catalyst for thought. So, because you all contributed quite a lot actually, you are NOT cardboard dogs.

I thought "It's About Time" had a significant edge over "Lesson Zero" in that Twilight Sparkle came up with a wide variety of approaches to working through her predicament, rather than just hammering on "I will solve somebody's problem, and this will teach me about friendship somehow I guess?" "Lesson Zero" was more entertaining for what everyone else was doing, I felt.
