THIS! Oh my god so much this! That's why I don't like the gimdark fics, and why I like to portray everyone in MLP (even the villains) as positively as I can.
This show's best feature is how idealistic it is, and how warm it makes me feel inside when I watch an episode.
also, as creepy as SOTB is, it's stil petty optimistic when you think about it. Ruby is content with her life, and the Necroponies do seem to be capable of change and redemption, that and the fact that Applebloom survives in the end, when a Downer Ending would be much beter tone-wise for that kind of game

That's part of the reason I liked it. Despite the grimdarkness, it still managed to maintain a bit of the show's tone. It's also an AU, which means I have no problem with it.
And yeah, I agree that the show is a great pick-me-up. It's good to watch at the end of a crappy day.
Not at all, it's a downer episode, and quite disappointing in its own way.
They should have Eridani Light Horse markings.

For some reason part of the "lesson" I got from "Best Night Ever" is that when you let yourself get hyped up expecting the "Best [whatever] Ever", you're pretty much always bound for disappointment.
So yeah, kind of a Downer Episode for me.
A bit of both really. It was a bit of a downer on its own, but I don't think it was a good episode in the sense that it was well done, since the whole resolution of it was a bit questionable, and there's quite a few characters who behave a bit less than faithfully, to the point where it almost stretched my belief in its credibility with the extremes.

I learned that Celestia is a massive dick who invited these ponies to the gala knowing full well that they'd be dissapointed, and would end up ruining the entire celebration for everyone.
All done to ease her own boredom

I think that's exaggerating a bit. What really happened is that she probably assumed that they'd spend the night with each other rather than isolating themselves, so they'd actually enjoy it.
But yeah, agreed that it probably isn't one of my favorite episodes. Although we got Flutterage and Rarity smashing her own slipper, which makes it worth watching.

I saw the last half or so of "Applebuck Season" in reruns.
I initially found the ending "saccharine", but now it strikes me as genuinely sweet. Anybody else experience something like this

why would it be "saccharine"?
Although I do wanna see Big Mac during an Applebuck season sometime. He's apparently better at it than Applejack, and can do it faster

Into the gala we must go, we're ready now, we're all aglow. Into the gala let's go in and have the best night ever.
for some reason that's my favourite lyric in the entire series so far
edit: Oh, and RD's verse too

I don't know, I probably didn't know the characters very well then
I kinda remember that moment in "The Best Night Ever" where I went "Oh I see where this is going! They all get a scene where they're happy, and then each of them gets more and more frustrated when things go wrong! But it was very economical doing the turn-around from 'pleased' to 'disappointed' all in one scene with Pinkie Pie there."
I also thought "Dang, it's the season finale, and most of these ponies haven't matured at all, huh. Classic sitcom! But Celestia just proved herself to be so awesome when she actually counted on that."

I thought Celestia was horrific in that episode
I still love her though

Actually, I thought the last episode was a pretty good indicator of some character growth. Fluttershy was more assertive(albeit in the wrong way), Twilight didn't completely lose it when things didn't go her way, Rarity didn't freak out over getting dirty...Okay, so some of them had developed more than others, but you could see first steps there, all the same.

Is it overly cynical of me to think that any character development the mane six have will probably not stick? I'm not saying that it will happen but I can't shake the felling that it might.

Well...The don't have a consistent timeline, so it's gonna come and go. But this show is, at the end of the day, all about the morals. So they have to keep some degree of character development, or else even the kids are going to pick up on Aesop Amnesia after a while. Plus, we've proven that this show goes well above and beyond, so it's not hard to imagine the writers trying hard to keep canon consistent.
