I'm not really fond of seeing friends die; even fictional ones.

Just wondering, Why is Derpy so popular? I don't have a problem with it by any means (In Heavy Rain my favourite character was a random 1 scene wannabe rapist called Troy for crying out loud) It's just I've never seen an Ensemble Darkhorse become a series' unofficial mascot before, or at least not to the level of Derpy. Especially since we have NOTHING to go on when it comes to her Personality and the like.

That's the other reason I'm not a fan of sad fics. I don't read stuff to get depressed, I'd rather be entertained.

^^^^That's understandable. I'm not a fan of fic that's sad just to be sad, either; but if it's well-handled and has a cathartic ending, I'm okay with it.

^^^She's the major indicator (aside from Equestria Girls) that the producers know about us, I think. The fact that her cross-eyedness was made canonical after the first few fans found it so funny is proof of that awareness.

The Bulk of derpy's popularity could from the fact that, essentially, we built her. She showed up as either a joke or an accident, and because we liked her so much she kept coming back.

Plus, she's a neat little metaphor for the show as a whole: She was just some little thing in the background, that exploded into popularity.

I've written Ditzy (I refuse to refer to her as Derpy; the majority of fanfics treat her in almost an insulting manner), as just a regular pegasi with a bum eye and a fixation on muffins.

Even the muffin thing is weird for me - actually, the whole Trademark Favorite Food trope is weird to me - but I always just thought of her as being wall-eyed, too. That's never equated to 'stupid' for me.

I left the muffin thing in because it's kind of funny, almost bordering on cute.

She is really a bit of an airhead in canon, though. Going the wrong direction two years in a row for the Winter Wrap Up, dropping all the contents of a delivery van... not outright stupid but kind of absent-minded, I think, or at least clumsy...

My personal view of Derpy is as sort of a Cloud Cuckoolander Genius Ditz; her thought process is so different from all the other ponies that they don't understand her a lot of the time, but she's not really stupid either. She's just different; maybe a bit absent minded and ditzy at worst. Never thought of her as being straight up stupid or retarded. Though the idea of a pony version of Forrest Gump does amuse me.

And yeah, I think she's popular because she was basically created by the fans. There are people who like the other characters, but Derpy didn't really exist as a character; she was a background pony who only because what she was thanks to the fans, so naturally the fanbase generally wants to see more of her.

For me Derpy is perfect example of Ensemble Darkhorse.

And I refuse to call her Ditzy because that name and Ditzy actions don't fit to Derpy character, and that make her dumb character, I allways see Derpy as pony with normal inteligence but with many odd quirks.

You know the word derp is associated with stupidity too, right? Even more than the word ditz, really

Y'know, I kind of want to see a fic now that treats her as Born Unlucky or even The Jinx, where rather than any particular trait, her accident-prone nature is a matter of a basically supernatural degree of bad luck - but she's so irrepressibly upbeat nobody even realizes.

So what, there no onscreen evidence that she is dumb, clumsy yes (Feeling Pinkie Pie), and Ditzy Doo character is dumb. Even her iconic expresion is not that dumb, unlike many fanart where she is drawned with really stupid expresion.

In my first story, I had her full name as "Ditsiella", a name she (rightly enough) hated, so she preferred Ditz.

What I'm saying is that your description of her character really fits the word "ditz" more than the word "derp"

And I say she is Derpy , name what fans give her, Ditzy, name of other pony (Lauren said that Derpy may be Dizty but not confirm that).

I'm warming up to the name Ditzy, as well. I've never really felt like anyone who refers to her as 'Derpy' means it in an insulting way, but that may just be because I don't feel inclined at all to associate with that side of the fandom.

^True, but what Jack's saying is that 'Derp' is associated with full-on stupidity. 'Ditzy' means someone who is 'silly and scatterbrained'.

There's no evidence to prove or disprove that her name is Derpy or Ditzy, unless I'm forgetting something. So calling her Ditzy makes just as much sense as calling her Derpy

Not to mention I just think Derpy Hooves is a terrible name. It's just so unappealing sounding and doesn't sound like the name of a pony in the show

I'm firmly in the 'Ditzy Doo' camp as well. For two reasons:

1. It's been mentioned in cannon. 2. Ditzy Doo synics better with the other ponies names, if I'm using the correct term. To me, Derpy Hooves as a name is just...silly.
