I don't really think anyone in the show is a Complete Monster. I just consider Gilda a total Jerkass

Now, if we're talking about Blue Blood (which we are now, by the way) HE never showed any signs of repentance. And while he might have an excuse, always being doted on, it just isn't enough for the sheer volumes of douche he spewed in that episode. It's one thing to have an arrogant noble, but he took it Up to Eleven, then snapped the knob off. At least the average noble has some idea of chivalry.

@Parable. Luna regretted what she did, a Complete Monster would never regret their actions.

I always thought a major point of the show was that the mane cast are such good friends, they can push each other to be the best people they can be. Gilda just needed a push from a close friend (Rainbow Dash was understandably pissed at her though), in order to be redeemed I reckon. I also didn't see her pride as being something that bad. To become a good person, you need to take small steps, and clearly Gilda accepting humble pie in front of all those ponies was too much. In a private 1V1 between her and dash, i bet that final confrontation would have been different

[up][up] At least Trixie and Gilda had MINOR redeeming factors, Blueblood was an asshole

[up][up][up][up][up] Worse was Luna ( but she wasn't that bad) plus she repented. Yeah there aren't complete monsters on this show at all.

Not sure why this was directed at me.

The only point I really want to advance here is that a jerk doesn't stop being a jerk just because they've had some hard times in the past. They're still every bit as much a jerk in the present. That's what really bothers me about the Draco in Leather Pants and Freudian Excuse tropes. What matters is trying in the present and wanting to improve in the future. That's what, to me, makes Gilda the worst of the three, and Luna the best.

Hell, it might be the only reason Gilda and Trixie aren't bigger villains than Nightmare Moon is because they're on a lower power tier; who knows what they'd do with alicorn power? I mean, if you're going to look at the Inferred Holocaust as an indicator of Luna's personality, you've got to keep in mind that that sort of thing is not an option for the other characters being considered.

Blueblood was an asshole

I think this is something that anyone who has ever heard of this show can agree with.

Personally, I blame Celestia for Blueblood's behavior.

wild mass guessShe is obviously one of those rich relatives that spoils the kids and showers them with goodies. Blueblood became a good for nothing because he mooched off of her.wild mass guess

The show's idealistic enough that I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that most of the antagonists are victims of their circumstances; Luna, Gilda and Trixie are willfully antagonistic and Blueblood is just entirely ignorant of the concept that people exist who don't live to please him, and while I'm not suggesting we entirely forgive Gilda for being a thief and scaring Granny Smith, or Trixie for being arrogant and annoying, I don't get the feeling that they're terrible people who couldn't learn better if they were shown some, ahem, love and tolerance.

Check that post again, Ginger. =D

All Gilda wanted was to be friends with RD and have a good time (her version of a good time is destructive granted but she didn't want to lose RD as a friend). Luna was fueled by spite, Trixie by egotism

Luna was influenced by an evil entity. Yes, she ultimately did make her own choice, but judging someone based on a single choice that they made while being affected by outside sources (especially evil ones) isn't exactly the best judge of character

^^Exactly. While Gilda, Trixie and Blueblood weren't exactly being possessed by primal darkness to bring about eternal night, I think the general point we apologists are getting at is that you can't really judge someone as harshly as perhaps those three have been for their actions over what's, speaking relatively, a very short time.

I've thought it over and now think that Gilda and Trixie aren't all bad. anyway I originally wanted to focus on the Cutie Mark Crusaders.

[up][up][up][up] I know, it's just that, outside of leather pantsing, Gilda just felt the nicest out of the main villains. She had the most sympathetic motive and the greatest potential for being a nice person

think about it, outside of luna, who can you imagine being genuinely nice with only minor changes to their personality

I dunno, I just read earlier in the thread that it's apparently cannon that Luna was affected by some kind of evil entity. Just going off of what I heard

Exactly how this thing influenced her has never been made clear to me. Was it some Wormtongue/Sauromon deal? Samson and Delilah? A bunch of people goading her online?

[up][up]It's Word Of God from Faust that something influenced Luna. She was rather vague about it, but the implication is that Luna wasn't totally in control of her actions, although she's obviously partially responsible. The most common interpretation is that whatever the evil force was somehow enhanced the feelings of jealousy that Luna already had, which was a stepping stone on her path to becoming Nightmare Moon.

@Red Savant: That's my point as well; we simply haven't known Gilda, Trixie, and the like long enough to determine whether they're inherently jerky. The thing is that it cuts both ways; we don't have any reason to assume that they have some sort of excuse. It also entirely possible that they do, but the point is that we don't know. We can't really argue "they're just jerks" vs. "they're jerks for a reason" because we don't have anything to go off of outside what appears in the episodes.
