I'm not sure what he means by "edge of insanity"; I don't really see the first season episodes as being any more "insane" than the second season's.
Case in point:
Typical Children's Cartoon - Character thinks everyone has forgotten about their birthday/is avoiding them for some reason. They get depressed, maybe run away or something. Get found, get a special message about how their friends love them.
My Little Pony - Character thinks her friends don't like her anymore, interrogates a baby dragon CIA style and then goes into a delusional fantasy where inanimate objects become her new best friends until the athlete of the team drags her to the party place.
Typical Children's Cartoon - New character is excessively boastful, becoming a nuisance to all around them. Bragging gets them into trouble (probably some easily unworkable situation, like a fight after school or something), which teaches them a lesson against bragging.
My Little Pony - Magician comes to town and not only brags but commits random acts of bondage. Impressionable youngsters believe boasts and end up calling a freaking
spectral bear down on Ponyville, forcing the resident magician to have to do some serious gandalf stuff to set things right.
Typical Children's Cartoon' - The two sides who are having a bitter land dispute end up sorting everything out without ever coming to blows, possibly (usually) finding out that some sinister third party was setting them up, making them mutual friends.
My Little Pony - The war actually happens, and its almost directly caused by the show's heroes. It ends by getting the natives addicted to pie.
Hope this helps.
