The triggered dialogue? Ah yeah that was a gutpunch.

I'm thinking some dialogue-free sequences like the transitions in Sonic 3 would work well too, if there was a progression in the game.

It'd be fun to have a procedural roguelike Daring Do game Spelunky style :D We could have her boast in the intro that she could steal the Artifact in the game with her wings tied behind her bet, and her hecklers take it literally and break out the rope [lol]

Oh, another issue with a Daring Do game. The enemies.. You can't really just start slaying things in a pony game, now can you? I don't think even stomping them Mario style would be exactly appropriate. And what the heck would she fight anyways? Jungle animals? And then inside dungeons? What could you have besides ancient traps really? All you can do with traps is make time trial levels like on Super Meat Boy (with less death and blood though). Unless it's a puzzle platformer, of course.

I think I'll start planning out an Adventure Game instead.

Most of the enemies in Spelunky would still work. The only ones you have to get rid of are humanoid ones like Cavemen, Shopkeepers, Cultists, and Mummmies. (Yetis can stay since they're "canon").
If there is anything that you are alone in thinking, it's "thinking that you're alone in thinking of your theories".

There were crocodiles or alligators in the dungeon in Sapphire Stone. Then there's stuff like Golems in the more magical tombs, Ahuizotl, rival amoral adventurers etc.

Oh and on an unrelated note I was just reading a fanfic with the words 'The wall was bear' in it. I found that hilarious.

[up] I loved Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

In my opinion, it's the finest of the original trilogy.

Ohh, you want friendship too? Plenty to go around tongue

[up][up][up][up]Watched a Spelunky trailer aaaand.. it could work. Just change humans with "Ground Ponies" or mole people. Aaand.. going for a "wings tied behind my back" thing could work. Though there wouldn't be much of a story to tell with it if any.

Ginger: Hmmm... currently writing a comparison essay of the two Wicker man movies for my Production Contexts class. I'm trying desperately to come up with something positive to say about the remake

Man, I don't know why everyone is so down on that movie, it was one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen. Pretty sure it was intentionally funny, too.

Sonic 3 was my favourite and still is. Sonic 2 was great, but 3 & Knuckles was more polished in some ways despite the hilarious physics bugs.

I'm pumped imagining Daring have to deal with a nastier trap density than the Spelunky protagonist and fewer nasties.

If I were do do a Daring Do game, I would do it in the style of Cave Story, making the platforming challenge come from timing and evasion rather than any extreme limitations of movement and having dialog unfold similarly as well (though Daring wouldn't be a silent protagonist, of course.)

I don't get why anyone would think that being a platformer means that you have to go light on the plot or characters.

Amen to that, brother. I always thought of Sonic 2 as waaaaay too hard sometimes (special stages, I'm looking at you!), at least Sonic 3's special stages, which look amazing btw, give you a fair challenge. Plus, Sonic 3k's music is some of the best and catchiest in the entire damn franchise! Flying Battery is still stuck in my head to this day...

I saw some pretty neat spritehacks of Sonic 3 that replaced Tails with your choice of Dashie or Fluttershy, and it was really neat.

[up][up][up][up]You can't really make much of a game prior to entering the dungeons. On Cave Story you wake up in a cave with no memory. With Daring you can't do that. You have to start the story from the middle of the adventure rather than from the beginning.

Sky Sanctuary Zone was always my favourite music.

Doomsday Zone is a close second.

@Gingerale: We could blast through a prologue sequence that ends with Daring somehow crash-landing into a cave and busting up her wing.

[up] After DJ Yuzoboy did a really sweet mashup of Michael Jackson's Jam! and Carnival Night, that became my favourite theme because it fitted so perfectly. MJ totally worked on the Sonic 3 soundtrack for a bit, which is why it rocked so hard. Fun thing: Sonic's music sounds like a mishmash of MJ, Lady Gaga, and some sweet poprock and metal, also Crush 40 and Cash-Cash.

This is probably the first Sonic discussion I've seen on the internet that hasn't either a) devolved into bashing any game made after 1995, or b) devolved into bashing the fandom. Good show, people.

As for those sprite hacks, they're pretty good, but a little lazy from what I've seen, as they are lacking a lot of animations and even switch back to the original sprites in certain corner-cases that they didn't bother to make sprites for.

@gingerale

I said in the style of Cave Story, not a complete clone of it. You could very easily start outside of the temple/whatever with whatever plot you wanted.

[up][up][up]But the hurt wing has already been used. It'd have to become a running gag in the stories to work. So really, either have flight or think up a different reason.

Yeah, I've seen those, and to be perfectly honest? It's... pretty bad. I mean, huge props to whomever took time out to put ponies in Sonic 3, but they didn't exactly do it well. The sprite's palette could have been fleshed out a bit more, and the animation frames are just, um, not good. At all. Definitely an A for effort, but I'd wished they made the sprites and stuff better, that's all.
