A couple of years ago, someone on the snopes.com message board mentioned TV Tropes. I checked it out, and was immediately hooked. For my first year or so, I mostly contributed to pages about music. Last May, I watched a FIM "mare-athon" on The Hub, and I never knew what hit me (Winter Wrap Up was the first full episode I saw.) Soon, all of my contributions were to various FIM pages.

It wasn't until last October, though, that I noticed, "Oh, they have a discussion forum! It. Is. On!" My first post on this forum was October 15th (thanks to storyyeller for that info.) I feel like I've known you guys a lot longer than that, though.

I honestly kind of support the decision to take down Nightmare Fuel. At this point, it's less legitimately scary stuff and more things that only a few people consider to be scary because they're bed-wetting nancy boys.

I've just realised, I've never actually launched a trope. Never even gone into YKTTW.

I did launch the page for Nodwick, though.

The thing is, if you take down Accidental Nightmare Fuel you may as well take down every YMMV page. And a lot of moment legitimately belong there. Not even as much as most of them, granted, but still quite a few.

Well, I made a page for my friend's RP, though I seriously doubt anyone but the players would be interested in it. I also made additions to Amulet and Nehrim.

This place is basically going to become another Wikipedia, isn't it? Why are they taking down YMNY sections and other sub-sections? This place is supposed to be fun.

As much as I detest the aurgment, this is a slippery slope we are falling down. The same objections where raised when pepole where calling for TT to be cut, and when the mass renames began.

Hopefully this time they will stick.

Well, it is. If they get rid of the Nightmare Fuel sections, then what's next? Crowning Moments? Web Original? Will more once humorous article titles be made boring? Forget Troper's Law, because no one is abiding by it anymore.

I would prefer those pages to be kept for humor's sake but I think it's becoming clear this place is becoming more silly than the fast one desires and since it's his site we can't do much to stop him.

If it comes to that I will fight against it. If an entire nation can successfully bring down SOPA and PIPA, a relatively small site like us can convince the powers that be to not let this site become another Wikipedia.

Also it feels like there is a knife being shoved down my left ear canal. I feel like overdosing on sleeping pills just so I don't have to deal with the pain...

At the end of the day we do want to be right and what not, be we have always kept the informal, light hearted, breazy, and humorus tone and feel. If we loose that we do become wikipedia, just with laxer rules.

I think that's why the site was apperently founded under a triumverate, but the funny face passed away and the other one sort of stopped coming leaving the tech guy. The fast one isn't as whacky as the rest of us and has a low tolerance for nonsense getting out of hand and from what I can tell, due to recent events I think protecting the site's reputation had become more important, thus why stuff like Troper Tales had to go and all sex topics had to be delegated to the fetishes thread.

I think Nightmare Fuel is still suffering from the same problem of definition that it was when they split it up into multiple tropes. What creeps people out or scares them varies so much from person to person, as does the degree to which they are affected by them, that there is hardly any order as to what subtrope gets which examples. Add that to the fact that some of the subtropes deal with creator intent, which is nigh impossible to interpret half the time, and I can see why people would want it removed. It almost seems to me like they need to just wipe them of all examples like some of the Mary Sue subtropes, as it's all too YMMV to bring to any sort of order.

Of course, I haven't looked too much into the situation, so I might be interpreting things wrong.

Sounds like the fast one is a misplaced mod for this site. If we're seriously going to start pruning tropes where there is milage to vary, then we might as well just hand troping over to Wikipedia. Getting rid of Nightmare Fuel altogether is not the answer. Just making sure the examples are universal is.

Okay, I hate to be that guy, but can we not derail this into a discussion of site policy? I want to keep the Accidental Nightmare Fuel pages just as much as the rest of you (and voted as such), but this isn't the place for it.

Sounds like some mods need to be promoted then.
