I've also encountered many a special needs student in middle and high school so I do have a frame of reference for my comparison, it simply comes down to different experiences for different people at this point.

My school had a great special ed program. There was this girl who definitely sounded like her. She was neither Autistic or Downs. Just mentally retarded. Poor girl.

@Ginger Oh, I know. Honestly, she doesn't have to be smart to be a good character. I already love how they portrayed her as caring and wanting to be helpful, despite not being too bright. The show is rather lacking in dopey grown up characters as it is anyway. I mean, the least intelligent of the Mane 6 is probably Applejack, and she is full of conventional wisdom and is nowhere close to being below average intelligence.

First time people don't like Tabitha's voice work?

So weird! Funny thing is Derpy is essentially now the new Minty, who's one of the more popular G3 ponies. Tabitha voiced her as well, in fact they sound kinda similar after watching a G3 clip (Minty sounds slightly more...girlish though, if that's a thing)

Yeah, I'm still thinking she's just a ditzy klutz. There's no way in heck that Hasbro would put play a mentally challenged character for slapstick.

The other thing is that we're asking the wrong question. We're all going "do mentally challenged people sound like that?", when we should be asking "can someone who isn't mentally challenged sound like that?" And the answer to that is yes; there's no reason to assume mental issues just because her voice is slurred a little.

What I meant was the weather team as in Rainbow Dash's supposed job. As it gets rid of the clouds, make the storms and all that. I didn't necessarily mean the weather team from winter wrap up.

@Ginger None of these characters NEED to exist. If this show had aired without Fluttershy from day one, people would still like it, but Fluttershy adds to the experience. Derpy could easily be a compelling and fun character without being smart. There is literally no reason to look poorly upon where something might go before it has ever went there.

I think that if Derpy does get more screentime her voice will start to even out and she may gain a bit of personality beyond living disater machine. I can totally see Dash totally getting fed up with her one day and then finding out Derpy has some hidden talent.

So at this point we have two options:

A. Derpy's real name is Ditzy Doo. Derpy is just a nickname cause of her lazy eyes.

B. Derpy and Ditzy are two seperate ponies. If this is the case what backgound pony would Ditzy be?

I'd rather her name just be Derpy. I know some people think that name is slightly offensive, but I think it would be worse if Dash was using a derogatory nickname at her.

I'm in the "Derpy" is a nickname camp.

Ditzy will star in a episode about bullying where we will learn that Derpy was a hurtful nickname given to her that by bullies that just stuck.
