I don't think they'll overuse Derpy. The last two episodes didn't even have a token appearance by her, so they seem to know that she's best used in moderation.

I love how this season has destroyed Fanon for at least two side characters (Luna, and now Derpy) now.

Like she was trying to talk with a cold or something.

Ninja'd like a boss.

But the fandom has been remarkably coolheaded about it so far.

@Flying: It's more that I don't want to see the show pander to the base too much; I mean, I got into the show watching episodes that weren't directed at bronies, and I can't imagine a Derpy episode being anything but a massive shout out to the fans. I'm not saying that it couldn't be done well, just that it has a much higher chance of going badly than episodes about other characters.

Also, I think people are blowing the "Down syndrome voice" thing out of proportion. They were probably just going for a generic "not to bright" cartoon voice.

All it did was give her a voice and make her clumsiness canon. Sounds more or less what the fans imagined her to be anyway.

Derpy's voice didn't sound autistic to me. I've been around autistic people (got a half-brother who is a really bad one). Many of them sound much louder, like they're speaking in caps. She just had a deep voice. No biggie.

Except for that horrible voice.

Isn't it odd to think that that scene wouldn't have existed without us?

The thought doesn't even make me feel happy per se. It just makes me feel weird.

Maybe but the writers have managed to do pretty well with episodes subverting and going beyond our expectations. I mean, even when we see the plot coming we're still surprised and satisfied in the end.

I have a great aunt with Down Syndrome, and that is most definitely not what Down Syndrome makes a person sound like. Down Syndrome essentially halts mental development at a very early age in addition to causing various physical deformities, so it is in fact much much worse than a cartoonishly dopey voice. My aunt only knows a few words, and is not functional at all. It's extremely unnerving to be around a person who is essentially a toddler in the body of 70+ year old woman with an extremely hunched back.

Sorry about having to rant a bit there, but you guys are exaggerating how bad that voice is a lot. That "dopey" voice is really something you don't hear in real life, or at least I haven't. I've only ever heard it in cartoons.

Yeah, I mean the show is about the Mane Six. And it doesn't seem like the kind of show to just add another member to the six.

@Lurker I once spent a week working in a special needs school. I can honestly say that a few of the students sounded like Ditzy did. Maybe it's not Down's Syndrome but still, the voice they gave her does not reflect well on her intelligence
