Of course it was gratuitous. It was pandering to the bronies. Only thing up for debate is whether or not that's a good or a bad thing.

@Ginger: A little bit, in my opinion, but a lot of people genuinely loved it, so it's probably positive overall. The only thing I worry about is them trying to hard to appeal to the Periphery Demographic, and therefore losing what we liked about the show in the first place. I certainly wouldn't mind making the show a little more mature (without making it darker) though.

The Derpy scene didn't feel out of place in the episode. While it wasn't strictly necessary for the main plot, it was exactly in tone with the show's style of humour.

If they made a scene that is aimed only at Bronies and adults, then it would be bad pandering.

I think, as long as they keep it to relatively small segments, it's not a big deal.

It does sort of break immersion, though. It's hard to get lost in a story when you hear something you know was aimed at you.

I prefer the fan voice

, but I kinda like St. Germain's take as well.

However, now whenever I watch fan voice videos on youtube, I bet the comment section will be filled with "OMG CANON VOICE SUCKS HASBRO IS EVIL FOR NOT HIRING THIS RANDOM PERSON OFF YOUTUBE FOR THEIR SHOW!"

The idea makes me shudder.
