If I may hijack the topic for a minute: I think I can now safely say that this fanfic of mine is on indefinite hiatus.

I'm having two problems. First of all, I think I wrote myself into an impasse by having the ponies end up captured in the second chapter (note to future writers: You should never have your heroes get captured unless you have a solid idea where the story is gonna go from there). Secondly, I'm not sure how some of my plot ideas will even work in a non-visual medium—the RPG elements are already stretching it.

The third and most damning though is just impatience. There's a part I foresaw in my imagination that I really want to write, but which I have to slog through a few more chapters to set it up before I can even get to it. For the curious, the part I want to write involves the ponies meeting Surprise, the G1 equivalent of Pinkie Pie, who in my version of events will be far more extreme. I'm actually tempted to scrap this fanfic, and turn "Surprise Meets Pinkie Pie" into an entirely separate, stand-alone story.

I imagine they would have to wear a lot of clothing to be considered 'naked'. I don't know how much, but I like to imagine they were in the 'middle ground' sort of thing - revealing, but acceptably so. Like low collars, and revealed midriffs, and stuff.

So you could have a concerned mother go "I will not have my foal go to the dance like that!" and removing a few skirts and a blouse and put a smaller hat on her? :)

See, the main reason it would bother me if they introduced a human would be that it would be so...off the wall. I mean, we have no indication humans exist in Equestria, so why bother with one? Beyond that, how would they get there? What plot relevance would they have in a largely slice of life show? Would it become a fish out of water show? I could see them used to build the world, but they would be a relatively minor character for that, and you couldn't have something that odd be minor. It just wouldn't make any sense to include a human.

Didn't the original series have a human main character? What was her story purpose? Audience identification?

In all seriousness, I'm not against "humans in Equestria" in fanfics, but they should never be a part of the show proper, for the very reasons kegisak said.

Yes, Megan. Her story purpose was that the G1 ponies were basically stupid and couldn't do anything without a ten-year-old girl to guide them.

G1 ponies were basically toddlers and G4 (or FIM) ponies (the mane cast, at least) are grown-up. Except Pinkie Pie.

That theory has one huge flaw, in that there were canonical "baby ponies" in G1.

Unless we assume that G1 was (mostly) Megan's delusion, which is the theory I would've gone with in my crossover 'fic (since most of the G1 canon is just too stupid not to retcon)

Specifically, it was a dying dream, since she's actually a timelord and Haruhi Suzumiya is her TARDIS.

That Ponychan thread suggested sentient monkeys. That could work! They find the island of Picknscratch (loosely based off Gibraltar) that has a mildly steampunky population of Bungling Inventor monkeys, hiring themselves out for engineer-type stuff.

could explain where a lot of pony stuff comes from - there are more than few tools that require hands...
