@Ginger: The qualities of a lot of quantum-level particles change when they're observed. It's weird as hell, but so is most of quantum physics. Anyway, the thread moves faster when it's not being observed, so... =)

Because one of the most basic elements of Quantum theory is that the observation of an object alters it's properties. Thusly, when the thread is observed it moves slower than when it is not observed (Note that this is only by the observer of the effect - it does not apply to the other thread-goers.)

Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle. Basically the way we observe particles affects them too, so we can either only observe their present momentum/direction, but unable to predict position, or vice versa. Internet-ized it would sound something like: too many refreshes lags the whole thread but leaves you sure of what's being talked about and allowing a lot of posts to be added at once leaves you confused.
