Well there is actually. Nightmare Moon is always laughing and Luna seems a lot more extroverted than Celestia and open to having fun (not that Celestia isn't she's just more distant to her subjects). And we don't know who is better at Magic.

But Celestia said that Discord broke free because the elements switched to Twilight and her friends. If Celestia lost control of the elements after sealing away her sister, then wouldn't he have broken free a long time ago?

I like to think that Luna DID use the elements when she was banished to the moon

Think about it, the elements seem to work by resonating with a partner of some kind. What if some part of Luna realised that she was evil, and was able to resonate with the elements enough to allow Celestia to use them?

It would also let Celestia know for a FACT that her sister was capable of being redeemed

I think Celestia is:

Magic, Laughter, Loyalty.

Luna is:

Kindness, Generosity, Honesty.

The Elements weren't working at full capacity then though were they? The fact that they had to banish Luna rather than purify her could be because only one pony was wielding them.

I didn't say she wasn't good at magic. But in a non Element assisted fight Luna won. Twice.

1000 years ago before the Elements came into play and The Mare in the Moon where within seconds of escaping from the moon she's already banished Celestia to the sun.

People are capable of doing things that they know deep down are wrong and should be stopped for. Some serial killers act really conspicuously because they're TRYING to get themselves caught because they want to be stopped

@Bad I always assumed that the princesses just WEREN'T as well attuned to the elements as the Mane cast were. Not because only one pony was wielding them

It's questionable whether or not Celestia fought against Nightmare Moon during the Nightmare Eclipse (when Twilight and her friends were there). She probably submitted quietly and waited for Twilight and the girls to free her.

It would be hard for Nightmare Moon to surprise Celestia there though, since she was completely expecting it. She probably didn't want to have to fight her sister again and chose to leave it up to Twilight.

Actually, NM strikes me as the type to play VERY fair.

I think she'd RELISH any oppurtunity she could get to try and outdo her sister. In fact, I think she'd get angry if Celestia actually held back during their fight
