I'd say Luna was Loyalty and Generosity at least. Since she'd betray those to become Nightmare Moon and thus leave them up for grabs for Celestia. I'd also argue that she could be Magic.

My thought is Celestia has Loyalty and Magic, Luna has Honesty and Generosity, and I'm still undecided on Kindness and Laughter. Granted, these are how I've divided it up for the sake of my fic, so the reasons aren't just based off of what I've seen in the show.

I still like to think that there were four other ponies who didn't get written down in the legends. My personal headcanon is that they became the four stars that eventually helped Luna escape.

1000 years is a long time. Fun might not have been a word back then. But yeah Celestia should have laughter.

The thing is, we have to give Luna the elements that she gives up when she goes evil. So I'd say Generosity, Kindness, and maybe Laughter. She sort of displays them all in "Luna Eclipsed", although she's not very good at it.

That's still an issue of language barrier. She hadn't had the concept described to her, so for all she knew 'fun' could just be games. She likely understands the concept of enjoying herself, just not the straight definition of fun.

I would say Luna would have Laughter Kindness and Honesty. I stand by Celestia being laughter.

Celestia has been misleading, which I'd argue is less truthful than Luna who seems to wear her heart on her sleeve.

In my headcanon, the reason Celestia is no longer attuned to the Elements is because she used them to banish her sister. I think it's a case of I Did What I Had to Do, but the Elements didn't like being used that way and are giving the both of them the Silent Treatment.

I honestly didn't think they shared the Elements between them. It's their bond as sisters that activated the Elements at the time, IMO.

Conversation inspired by this (epic) picture of the clash between Celestia/Luna and Discord

This is my head cannon as well. The Elements stoped working when the Mane Six had their friendship destroyed, it makes sense that being used against a sister like that, violating they very thing they stand for, would leave them useless to the one who did it.

I like to think the first time they fought Discord was without the Elements. They lost and that's what convinced them they needed the Elements of Harmony.

There's arguments to give either of the sisters any of the Elements.
