Well, I use furry by the dictionary definition, of anthropomorphic - any non-human thing with qualities. Hence, the ponies are anthropomorphic. To a small degree than the norm (90/10 to the more common 40/60 [animal/human]), but still anthro.
The thing that makes me lean away from the furry fandom as a whole is simply the way it's received. I've been called 'the least furry furry' by a few people, simply because It's not an aspect of me that I don't excercise or talk about much. I enjoy cartoons, stories and whatnot with the material, but that's about the long and the short of it.
I know that
sounds petty, but a large part of what defines a group is it's public perception. Everything is going to have degrees within it, but for the sake of convenience people
will paint with broad strokes. So a person might call themselves a republican while only really supporting a few of the same things as a republican - let's say that they only support lower taxes and less gun control, for example. They could be very socially liberal, and may not have problems with the government helping out a bit, but if they self-identify as a republican people are going to assume their interests lie in certain places. Such it is with furry - I'm an outlier because I don't represent the public perception. If a person where to point at the public idea of furry and ask if I were that, I would say no. Very few people do, in the end, but it's the nature of the beast, unfortunately.
Bringing it back to the topic at hand, that's sort of the issue. By strict definition, most bronies can be said to be furries. It's simply that they reject the public perception, and thus the lable as a whole. They still fit it, but they reject it because of a very small part of it, and I understand that. It just strikes me as odd to the ''degree' which they reject it. It's like
Armoured Closet Gay.
