Thanks. I saw the thread on my watchlist and I was like "I bet they're talking about New Years instead of ponies" so I just had to pop in.

Well, we should be talking about ponies... wait, why's that a turnoff for you?

It's not, but I just wanted to pop in and see if I was right.

Do you think they have a sort of equivalent? In a way I always sort of found it odd to celebrate the new year. Reasonable, but odd at the same time. I always thought it might make more sense to have another, more important holiday on the new year. I mean theoretically the christian calendar should have new year on christmas, for example.

Maybe they celebrate hearth's Warming eve on their new years. It seems like it might make sense to develop a new calendar around an important event like that, or at least divide it into a new era.

For all we know, Hearth's Warming may very well mark a new year, with years being numbered since the founding of Equestria. It would make a lot of sense.

Another weird thing about pony time is that the length of the seasons is decided by the ponies themselves. While we base our calendar around the rotation of the seasons, the length of their seasons my very well have changed a bit throughout pony history, whether due to mistakes or simple policy changes. Would a year be a static unit of time to them? Or would it change when the seasonal lengths changed?

I have to think that they would have consistent seasonal times. Otherwise, why have a winter at all? You can't grow anything, it's cold, and it makes it much more difficult to get around. It seems like they'd have to have some sort of balance, so I think the seasons need to be a certain length.

It seems likely that the calendar shapes the seasons in Equestria rather than the other way around. I mean, it doesn't seem all that likely that seasons were natural even before Discord; the unicorns controlled the sun and moon before that, so we know the 'ponies control the natural order' thing didn't orginate with him or with the founding of Equestria.

I guess. They would probably take days off of other seasons to add to another rather then simply adding days. It does bring up the funny idea of ponies lobbying for longer summers and such in the time before Celestia.

Also, I bet the reason they have to have winter is because it would create an ecological disaster if they didn't. The animals and plants still have seasonal cycles as far as we know. Birds still migrate, and other animals still hibernate, albeit still with the assistance of ponies. Things would probably start dieing off if a season just up and vanished.

Hmm, I wonder if the whole unicorns changing day and night was a hoax. I mean couldn't the just flash their horns and say "we did it"?

They could be, but I definitely imagine that the pegasi were fond of brinkmanship and would have pushed relations between the tribes to one of two conclusions - either the unicorns are exposed as tricksters and lose their only claim to negotiative power or 'cave' at the last second and raise the sun, to the same effect. If they can actually move the sun and moon, though, a few dark days might have convinced even Hurricane to lay off them.
