Ok past the OOTS jokes, I don't see the pnoies as being racist. They didn't fear or hate Zecora because she was a Zebra. they didn't even know she was a Zebra till Twi told them, they just thought she was a weirdly colored Earth Pony. So her race was meaningless in any fear, they feared her because she was different. Note again not a different race because the ponies did not know that, and upon learning it, it did nothing to change there opinion, so everything they thought about Zecora was completely independent of race.

Fear of foreign cultures is a part of racism.

Fearing people because of how they decorate their houses, how they speak and what kind of idle habits they have, is racism if the before-mentioned traits are their culture.

Well, I doubt it would have occurred to most early explorers that african americans were a different race. They were just concerned by all these oddly coloured people. It's the same difference, really.

I mean it's sort of a low-end racism, there's no malice, simply ignorace. But it's still racism.

Again, they weren't afraid of her for being foreign because they didn't KNOW she was foreign.

Further most of the fear didn't stem from Zecora herself, but all the rumors they heard about her from other ponies.

And yes all the issues they had stemmed from ignorance, not malice. As soon as the ignorance was corrected, all problems were solved.

Super fanfic recommendation:

Striped Like Me

A rewrite of "Bridle Gossip": Instead of everyone getting cursed by the Poison Joke, only AJ does. It turns her into a Zebra.

It makes AJ's mindset sympathetic: you can see the logic behind her actions, and she isn't used as a strawman (pony). It's got pretty good humour, and some clever wordsmithship.

Read it all. Especially you AJ fans that are always clamouring all over this thread.

I'd honestly be hesitant to even label the cast as racist in "Bridle Gossip"; there are a couple of semi-legitimate reasons for them to be wary of Zecora, and it's kidna tough to argue that they're racist against zebras when most of them don't even know what a zebra is. Yeah, they're scared because she's different, but that doesn't necessarily equate to racism. They're obviously still ignorant and way too quick to judge her, but it's not like they all jumped to "she's a zebra and therefore" evil for no reason.

So on the subject of games, I've been watching my brother play Spore lately. If I ever get that game, I am so making a pony race. It's a shame you can't go for seapony, since you can only make land creatures, but oh well.

I shall create an almighty race of Alicorns, and roleplay the rise and fall of their mighty civilization, until only mere shadows of their old selves remain in the form of the three tribes.
