Was it HER ego or was it other writers's ridiculous misconception about her ego?

I'm not bothered by one off characterization goofs too much actually. As long as they don't become permanent, I find I enjoy things much better if I ignore it and see the rest of the episode. MMDW did a lot right IMO, with the acting, humor, and especially the musical direction being quite good. It just suffered from the writers seeming unfamiliarity with the characters and setting, leading to the "OOC Ponyville".

@ginger: I actually see this happening:

Twist: My special talent is in making candy, especially candy canes! What are your special talents?

@Ginger: She started like that, but you really should remember that once the MDW gets introduced every time RD tries to save somepony she fails solely because of her ego. It's not a case of "she's being a jerk but at least she gets the job done", she isn't getting the job done.

She's always had an ego. She's always claimed that she was better than everypony else. She stooped to blatant cheating to win an ultimately pointless competition (and only started doing so after a sizable crowd had gathered might I add)

She had never been put in a DIRECT situation like the one in MMDW. She's saved the world before, but that was always a team effort.

I know, I was just arguing that at one point she DID have pure intentions. So I don't think ALL of her positive traits were discarded

You would think she would throw around the fact that she saved the world a couple of times before. I still expected her to be more jerky then she was in that episode, so yeah.

Rainbow Dash never did that. Applejack was a sore loser and invented the "no wings" rule after she lost.

The dam broke in MMDW because RD just had to take a moment to literally pat herself on the back.

To be fair if all it took was a small tap that dam was going down anyway.

No. If you're going to bring that up I am going to argue that you can't use it as evidence. If it wasn't fair why didn't Twilight the arbiter of the event speak up? Why didn't the crowd? Why did Applejack wait until the event was over?

@Perpetual: Yeah, pretty much. I think the basic concept of the episode was solid, but it wasn't handled well. As for Dash's character; it's right on the edge between in-character and OOC. I can buy Dash's ego leading her to endanger somepony, but I can't imagine her A. jumping to that point so quickly (after her first rescue, she tosses a baby over her shoulder) and B. continuing to endanger other ponies after she realizes how badly she screwed up.

I feel like S1 RD would have built up to that point more slowly, and then had a "What the hell am I doing?" moment when she realizes that somepony might have died because of her attention whoring.

EDIT: Oh bugger. Guys, chill. You're fighting over whether a magic rainbow pony is being a jerk or not. Everybody just take a break to cool off for a minute.

They toss babies off cliffs in Cloudsdale all the time. Whoever survives is assured to be at least a moderate flier.

Well, in HWE, they were obviously based off of Sparta...

Unfortunately she never seems to realize that, even by the end of the episode. She seems more interested in competing with the Mare Do Well then anything else, which I guess you could argue is mildly OOC but I don't know.

Even if something isn't TECHNICALLY against the rules it doesn't stop you from being an asshole for exploiting it. RD using her wings circumvented the point of most of those events and there was physically no way for AJ to compete if RD used her wings.

When you do a weight lifting competition you lift with your arms, not your feet. Why? because your competing to see who has the best weightlifting techniqe and arm muscles, not leg muscles. Similarly, in a long Jump your're comparing the leg strength of the competitors and their long jump technique. If a competitor had wings he's completely circmvented the point of the contest

AJ didn't make it a rule because she trusted Dash to play fairly. and because it slipped their minds

Please, let's just let it go. Different writers have different views of Dash and handle her differently, and not all of them are apparently capable of giving her the roundness she's enjoyed from others.
