It's Nodoka from Mahou Sensei Negima!, in her one appearance in JTeeth's avatar gallery that unnerves me.
Can you think inside the chimney?

I can agree with J Teeth on analysis of MLP:Fi M. Though I tend to get annoyed at the people who try to shutdown discussions with the "it's a kids show, stop thinking about to hard" argument.

[up]I'm not saying not to think too hard about it (again, wrote 60+ pagestongue), just that if you are going to analyze it, analyze it as what it is rather than what you want it to be. I don't like the whole "stop analyzing it so much" thing either, but I also find stuff like "we should hold it to the same standards that we hold all other shows to" annoying, because it's unfair to the show. It just wasn't written to those specifications.

Yes, we can hold the show up to scrutiny, but we also shouldn't expect it to have the same depth of characterization and plot that Moby Dick has. Sometimes it feels like the fandom is reducing their own enjoyment of the show by holding it to standards that the showmakers never intended the show to meet.

It does say a lot about the show's quality that plenty of people do hold it to the standards of other shows and still enjoy it a lot, though.

[up][up]Yup. The show's ability to stand up to that kind of analysis is part of what makes it so good. But I still think it only applies up to a point.

I can't say that I see that all that much, but I may just be looking at different parts of the fandom.

But I do agree that there are limits to what you can expect from a show like this.

When someone starts a post with six or more arrows, I just say "Screw it." I'm too lazy to go back that far to see who they're replying to.

Going to bed now. G'night.

[up][up]All I mean is that I think some complaints about the quality of the writing are more due to the nature of the show rather than incompetence on the part of the writers. It obviously doesn't excuse them from making actual mistakes, though. Like the fact that Pinkie is sometimes more prop than character.

But I'm going to stop talking about that before I go into complete incoherency because it's one in the morning.

Well, there are a lot of people who think that kid's shows should be held to lower standards.

You will note that Lauren Faust and her crew were not among them.

Lauren believes the show good enough for the parents and other grown-ups to enjoy it alongside their children. I agree.

I usually find "It's just a kid's show" to be a valid reason to stop overanalyzing once you realize that the creators also don't think things that far - for that particular topic, that is. I don't know, it seems pointless trying to find things when there are no intentions for they being there.

So I got up to page 2410 before giving up trying to catch up. What did I miss? (Seriously, that's just a few days, people).
Japanese Teeth avatar

I'm not necessarily saying that it should be held to lower standards, just that it should be held to different standards according to the purpose of the show. So MLP can be held to high standards as a children's show because that's what it is. Holding it to criteria that isn't appropriate to its' genre is going to result in the show being judged unfairly. Take the whole "continuity" issue for example; I find that a lot of (not all) complaints about the Negative Continuity of the show are unfounded because it was never supposed to have continuity to begin with. The show is designed to be taken by an episode-to-episode basis; it was never intended for all the episodes to build on each other. So when people complain about, say, the fact that there isn't a steady build-up of characterization as the season progresses, I can't fully agree with it because that was never the show's goal. It's consistent (the episodes don't contradict each other), but not cumulative (they don't build on each other as the season progresses).
