Pinkie's actually a pretty good example of what I'm talking about. If you take any given episode, she tends to be tolerable. The only episodes where she's gratuitously wacky are "Swarm of the Century" and "Luna Eclipsed", but other than that she isn't too bad. The thing is, when you take her cumulative antics over the course of the entire show, she looks more flat. She isn't entirely flat, but she looks like she has a massive inability to really mature much. And I think it isn't due to a problem with the character, but that the nature of the show requires the status quo be maintained.

Well, you can enjoy anything when your standards are so low they're already met. But seriously, I think there's something to be said for not putting the show on a pedestal. Realistically high standards are fine, but "I expect every episode to be of Shakespearean quality" is only going to come back to bite you.

Like I said, I enjoy Pinkie Pie's antics, but it seems like she was never meant to be all that deep. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I agree, but it still means she looks kinda flat compared to the rest of the cast. I'm fine with her being the wacky comic relief, but I feel like there needs to be more to the character than just that.

I am seeing a therapist, yes. I've been feeling better than I was last Thursday and Friday. Somebody is framing me for apparently causing $150 worth of property damage when I didn't do anything. And my mom is siding with the person accusing me. So yeah, that was part of it. And she accused me of treating her like shit, just because I say "What?" a lot and apparently my tone of voice when I say that word is NASTY. So, yeah, family issues.

On the current subject, my expectations are always that what I am about to watch/read/listen to is going to be average. Sometimes these expectations are met, and when they are exceeded I am pleasantly surprised. Better than thinking "Oh shit, this is gonna suck." and then my imagination would run wild like Twilight's in Lesson Zero.

Well, she didn't exactly do anything horribly bad. And as Snips and Snails could attest, she was in a very forgiving mood that day.

Alternatively: you don't catch someone after they use a smoke bomb and run. That's just common courtesy, man.

Yeah, Trixie didn't really do anything other than being a jerk. The Ursa Minor was totally the result of Snips and Snails being idiots.

While very few things actively point to hard continuity in the show, I think it does a very good job of never contradicting what development it does do. Characters rarely, if ever, "forget" lessons learned in past episodes, with the exception of the CMC, who explicitly shrug off the lessons they learn at the end of their episodes.

Seriously, she knows I can't hear too well and she talks very quietly. It's either a mutter/mumble or SCREAMING LIKE A FUCKIN BANSHEE with her.

Nobody else says I treat them like shit, so I guess it's her. I'm trying to be more quiet, like Fluttershy.

Apparently I destroyed a door hinge when I opened a door forcefully (not my fault the door to the establishment didn't open unless you were really strong, so I had to push with ALL my body strength. The door was already bad and I seriously couldn't have busted the door hinge)

@Perpetual: Yeah, the only other things I can think of (ignoring the pilot, because obviously it sets up the series) that point to continuity are the references to the gala and the dresses that Rarity made. And even those are more like a Continuity Nod than actually building a consistent story. That said, other than Aesop Amnesia, everything is consistent. But consistency is not the same as continuity.

As you may read from all my post I tend to overthink them as complex characters. I hope I am not mistaken as JT post seriosly made me to doubt :S

Characters are as deep as you make them, as everyone has their own personal interpretations of a character. It's all a very personal experience IMO, and you shouldn't let someone else's opinions on a character sway you too much unless you really find you agree with them.

Also that picture probably filed my quota of cuteness for the whole week in one go

@Fallen: Believe me, I've treated the characters as complex as well. All I'm saying is that it's good to take a step back and remember that this is a children's show that was written a certain way. It's all well and good to analyze it, but you have to analyze it for what it is. You can't take a children's show and approach it the same way you'd approach something targeted at adults. And I agree that the characters are complex, especially for a kids' show. It's just that you have to remember that it's a kids' show, and as a result the characterization isn't going to conform to the way it happens in other shows.
