@Pony Abridged Series: I'd say that none of the Abridged Series out there are perfect. If you put them together, however, you'd have a pretty awesome product. My favorite bits are (purely from memory):

Friendship Is Witchcraft's songs, great and varied voicecast, quotable lines and sometimes clever plot deviations (like turning "Look Before You Sleep" into Twi forcing her friends to reenact a horrible shipping fanfic written by her).

The Mentally Advanced Series' Dashie is pretty lovable. So is Apple Bloom, a great Only Sane Man. Scootaloo is great. The dialogue often is super-fast-paced and cleverly constructed. Also THRAKERZOD.

Camaraderie Is Supernatural also has a nice cast. Applejack changing accents with every line is funny, but Pinkie as an actual Fangirl of the show within the show is genius. Also, the meta message of the pilot episodes is really cleverly made, showing what an Abridged Series should be.

I couldn't force myself to watch the mentally advanced series' first episode because of how horrible the guy's voice acting is. He doesn't even try.

I can understand that, Fran . But, if I remember correctly, he gets quite better in the later episodes (which themselves get better). Still, yeah, clear disadvantage to the other ones.

I just didn't laugh at any of the abridged series for some reason. My best guess is that

A.) It's abridging a show that I actually love.

B.) I can handle STUPID humour, but not dark humour, which is what a lot of these series like to do for the sake of irony.

C.) They seem to like making Pinkie the sane one

I agree with Ginger about the dark stuff, that really is one of those lazy fallbacks of abridging people sometimes. "Maaaaaan I need a joke :(. I know, Fluttershy is pure evil and Rarity's a racist. That should do it".

I'm just going to leave the season 2 overview here again, since it was like one in the morning when I posted it the first time.

I'm right in the middle of reading it . It truly deserves the title of "overthinking" in a positive way, you are really good at writing!

How about "We are aware that we're in a series, and the plot is stupid"

Your recap was great! I'm not gonna write an overthinking recap of your overthinking recap ^^, so let's just keep it at that. Completely agreed, however, that Season 2 lacks episodes with an outside antagonist that the whole cast has to deal with (excluding Discord, obviously). Those were great episodes in Season 1!

That's why Code Ment is one of my favourite abridged series out there. The characters are insane but they aren't overly self referential or dark in their humour. All the humour just comes from how nutty the supposed genius characters are

I guess that's why the MLP Abridged series are so prone to darkness, because it's considered funny to reverse what's prominent in the actual show.

I still don't care much for it though

I've heard worse gouvernment strategies.

I dunno, "Like fire, hellfire, this burning in my skin" made me actually do a Spit Take.

But overall the rule of thumb for making any abridged series is "Flanderize most characters; reverse other characters".

I thought the obvious dub-over for RD and AJ's elements was pretty funny.

Friendship is witchcraft doesn't really make me laugh as so much as it makes me ponder. I've been trying to pin down Twilight's characterization in it besides "Childish moron" and I've come to a conclusion she's a sort of parody sue. Or rather She's being portrayed as a young girl who tries to self-insert herself as a Mary Sue. A lot of the traits are there:

Obsession with the god-like main-like character i.e. Princess Celestia, she wants to be called princess, she writes shipping fanfiction that derails other characters i.e. her friends, during the montage in Dragone Baby, she was an alicorn. There's also the blatant obsession with Japanese stuff. And while it's more circumstantial than anything else, she's purple.

I'm still not sure how the weird sounds she makes and her ADD play into it.

What's purple have to do with being a sue?

It's come up frequently on common Mary sue traits, I think it has to do with it being a regal color, I think it also frequently pops up because it's a sort of unique color that's feminine but also dark so it has an air of power to it, and it's tend to be used to display magic, and if the young lady writing said character is going through some sort of dark phase purple is the perfect colorful/feminine substitute for black.
