Minor quibble: But doesn’t Rainbowdash seem a bit selfish and proud for the element of responsibility? Her primary concern always seems to be herself and while she did make the right choice in episode one to continue helping her friends rather than do what she wanted to do, it seems like every time we see her there after she's thinking of herself first.

Also: What’s the deal with Clestia? Did Nightmare Moon kidnap her in episode one? If so how did she escape just when it was convenient? Or was she just chilling her heels and leaving everything to her student and the possibility that she might make friends that just so happen to represent the elements of harmony needed to save the day? Was there a prophecy or some other plot justification that I missed?

@L Mage: The explanation I go with is that Celestia didn't want to fight her sister, so she left it up to Twilight in the hopes that she could use the elements to purify Luna without harming her.

As for Celestia, common opinion is that she was being held by Nightmare Moon. She arrives after Nightmare Moon has already been purified (because she's not being held anymore).

Another theory holds that Celestia knew that she wouldn't be able to purify her sister alone, and would only be able to banish her again if she took up the Elements again herself. All she could do in order to save Luna was trust in her student and the other Element bearers (who she was obviously familiar with, if she had a list of their names).

Now what would your friend Pinkie Pie say to that?

@L Mage: Yeah, this is one of the fastest threads in the forum. But yeah, RD's element of loyalty is an important part of her characterization. She does get a big head really easily, but she's there for her friends when it actually matters.

^Celestia knew that the other five ponies were in Ponyville and the potential they had. She also knows Twilight better than anyone (including maybe Spike), so she knew that she wouldn't stay antisocial for long.

She knew that one pony alone, even one as powerful as her, couldn't be in full attunement with the Elements. Powerful as they are, and powerful as she is, she could still only banish Luna to the moon. Personally, I'm surprised that it took Nightmare Moon as long as it did for her to escape. Her prison, and the stars themselves, are her domain.

What I'm getting at is that Celestia knew that by herself, she'd never be able to purify Luna again. She didn't want to go through that again. She didn't want to give up on her sister. And so, she sought a way to pass the power of the Elements on to a group who could wield them to their full potential.

Luna loves you too, sweetie.
