Ao S: Some ponies are rideable, but those are amongst the tall-end of the Pony-scale. But yeah, I kind of imagined a pony in the show standing on their back legs being about our height.
Making a horse quite a bit larger.
Could make for some good
Gentle Giant moments, though.
"Please, Miss Sparkle, could you not use your magic so much? It's making me skittish..." said the large draft horse, ears folded back nervously...

Calvary steeds would tower over the Equestrian ponys. Even Epona would be a giantess compared to them!
Oh, no. Horses are not clumsy by any means. They'd have trouble fitting through some of the doors in Ponyville, though, and would probably find themselves most at home at Sweet Apple Orchards, if anything. In the barn, due to their size...
Make them illiterate for giggles. They've never had a need to read, except for the occiasional simple signpost or glyph.
I'd envision them getting all reverent or something if a unicorn or pegasus shows up. They have the most in common with Earth Ponies, anyway.
Perfect: it's time for the Horses to do their very occasional visit to Sweet Apple Orchards for trade (Big Mac does nost of the talking with them, lol). Due to some setback, they get delayed there, and end up meeting up the rest of the Mane Six. Optional: One of the Mane Six finds one of the Horse diplomats rather cute.
^ Not optional: One of the Horse diplomats needs to be in full-plate barding. Don't ask how he got into or out of it.

"Hm. No choice. I think we're going to need to do something awesome." - Holden Shearer
^^ As cute as that would look, the Horse would probably out her on a pedastal to
worship, rather than end up as a couple.
Fluttershy would be the one to get them calmed down after getting pannicked, though.

Even more interesting: The reactions to the Horse visit by Celestia and Luna, once the Royal Sisters find out:
Denying that Horses still exist, and casting a forgetful spell ver the Mane Six and the Apple Family, after telling the Horses that they're not wanted within Equestria. Cue sad looks by all involved, poof, and then life goes on without missing a beat.
Parting shot of a saddened Horse overlooking the farm from a distance, before turning and trudging away into the sunset.
...not sure why. The thought just grabbed my brain like a rabid pitbull and won't let go.
Dang it. I got dust in my eyes or something now.

Judging by Spike's reaction, they're not fiction.
I analyze "Geek Culture" here.

Catharsis is a good thing. I've overdue for my dose of it.
They'd be more primitive than Earth Ponies, as they lack all but the most rudimentary of innate magical ability. They've survived up to "modern day" by trading with outlying Earth Pony settlements, forming a symbiotic relationship with them. They are well-spoken, though. They're not stupid or dulll, just not as complex. Simpler.
For the life of me, I can't come up with a justification of why the Royal pair would want them driven out.
Maybe not all horses are kind and benevolent. Equestria knows not what war is. Horses do. To avoid the spread of dangerous ideas, they seek to keep Equestria free of all Horses. maybe Celestia thought they had all been bred out, already? There's not a lot of pure Alicorns left, so it would follow if the first two sub-races were Horse and Alicorn, that if Alicorns are rare, Horses would be jsut as rare. The revealation that they're
not scares Celestia.
...Unless y'all can come up with a better reason.

Yeah, if I'm honest, I'd rather just stick with the they are a seperate race rarely seen in Equestria but are otherwise welcome guests idea. Suits the tone of the show better.
I made 50,000th post.

Yeah, Catharsis might be a good thing (arguably, athough I really don't get it. At least not in the sense of intentionally making yourself depressed.) but pointless conflict is NOT

In my head cannon there were pro to ponies (and maybe horses to) who where just like our ponies, plus all talking animal traits from this series but no magic, not even Earth Ponies magic and they breeded with Alicorns, result were 3 races Pegasi, Earth Ponies, and Unicorns, each of them have only part of Alicorns magic/traits.
They are like the others. Strange, hideous, resisting, fighting. Only these were not like the others. They did not die.
