It's probably reflective of the areas we all live in. I'm from the northeast United States, and my high school was fairly heavily white; I think our second most-populous group was Latino/as. In my experience (which is limited, since I never did pay much attention to others in high school), groups divided by racial lines were much more common than mixed groups. My circle of friends had one Haitian girl, for instance.
I don't really think there's a 'right' or 'wrong' answer to the question; each person's life experiences are their own, and we really can't do anything but extrapolate from our experiences, so calling one set 'right' and the other 'wrong' seems silly.
