Jet Set and Upper Crust made her think "connections to Ponyville bad for reputation", and that colored her actions after that.
That was my interpertation.
And yes, the unusual plot subversion was awesome. Especially in a show like this which often uses predictable plots.

Fnacy pants and that pony with celestia's head only took interest on Rarity after she said that she came from Canterlot castle.
I am not entirely sure hat Fancy pants is s good as he claims. But at the end he acted like a gentlecolt I agree.

Am I the only one who got this weird vibe when Rarity first recieved the invitation to the garden party?
It was because it was from Jetset and Uppercrust. Until then those two had seemed relatively low on the social ladder, and they were clearly jealous of Rarity's fame and the way Fancypants favourited her (look at their expressions during the Wonderbolt's Derby)
I honestly thought that the party was a setup. A trap to embaress Rarity in front of Fancypants

True his interest was sparked by regular snobbish interests, but we didn't see him judging Rarity at any point after that, did we? It was the other ponies putting the pressure on her.
Though the cake frosting thing would have had anyone raising eyebrows.
But yeah, Fancy Pants is best Canterlot Pony for now.
"High Class Society" is just as bad as TV drama highschool popularity wars, I see?

I kinda liked the fact that the whole "high-society" thing wasn't portrayed as inherently bad; yeah Jet Set and Upper Crust were jerks, but other than that there really wasn't anything wrong with what Rarity was doing other than the fact that she prioritized it over her friends.

That's a good point still I am not entirely sure about any of the canterlot ponies they all seemed to like Rarity for her relationship with the princess and fancy pants.
They all treated her better after she mentioned that she was in the castle including fancy pants.

I'd be more tolerant of the high society thing if I could see any point to them. They trot around acting like they're the most important ponies in Equestria, but what do they actually do? All we see them doing is attending social events, and if they do that as often as Rarity was this episode they can't be accomplishing anything.

It just felt weird for THOSE two to be the ponies holding the party (and inviting their rival, no less)

They seem to be richer than average ponies and they seemed to be using their money on bussiness. But I agree in that they don't seem to be very productive compared to ponyville or applelosa

Considering just about everyone there appeared to have some gathering or business they were promoting (the art gallery, the auction, a new yacht), I think that the whole point is exposure. Same reason that it was good for Rarity's business.

^But it was only good for Rarity's business because Fancy Pants said it should be. Her exposure to the rest of the Canterlot set mattered absolutely nothing at all until Fancy Pants seemed to remember that one of the ponies at the party actually did something for a living and that she happened to be a fashion designer.

Even so, it's a good opportunity for Rarity to show off her fashions on the off chance that somepony asks about her dress or she just happens to meet and hit it off with somepony in the fashion industry. Yeah, there's no guaranteed return, but it wasn't going to hurt her business any.

But the sad truth was that Rarity didn't do that to sell her dresses. She did that to fit it with the high society ponies.

I just think that all sounds like an awful lot of faffing about for the sake of picking up a few potential upper class customers. Any social structure where success at business is based more on going to parties or whatever than actually being talented and doing work is stupid in my opinion.

I never said it was a good idea, just that she didn't really have anything to lose by doing it. I don't really get the whole "upper class" thing either. But the fact of the matter is that the quickest way to get recognition is for someone who's already famous to point you out.
I also think real life is stupid, so there you go.

They're very much nobility - they play their games of intrigue and fashion and pretend they hold positions in the courts and can influence Equestria itself, but the real power lies with Celestia, Luna and their respective ministries, which are staffed by much more sensible ponies.

Really the whole "high society" seem seems more like celebrity stuff. Like they're all fashion designers or business ponies that you wouldn't see at work.

There's something special about the feeling when your 20-year-old sister, operating only on the opening two-parter, manages to identify Fluttershy and Applejack toys.
It's like a mixture of pride and "I'm a grown man who introduced his grown sister to a My Little Pony cartoon, what the hell is going on?!"
