I’d imagine it appeals to many people on the strength of the characters as each one is pretty unique and obviously had a lot of thought put into their personality.
In a nutshell, yes.
But apart, all we are is just a pile of mush and some crumbly dry mess...

Tween girls are a lot more interesting than even their own parents realize, so actually getting into their heads like Faust has done makes for some refreshing characterization.

It beats the sterotype of nothing but boys, clothes, and makeup!11. I still wish there could be show for the Galaxy Girls.

Question: Why is Ponyville's Town Square circular◊?

Town squares are never square. Rectangles with nearly equal sides, at best.
But apart, all we are is just a pile of mush and some crumbly dry mess...

things no one cares about
Central Avenue in Columbus was actually Franklinton's Central Avenue, before Franklinton was annexed into Columbus. That's why it's slightly west of the actual center of the city.

Circleville, Ohio was originally built around a literal town circle back in the early 19th century. But people didn't like it, so in 1837 they formed The Circleville Squaring Company to rebuild the town as a typical grid. No traces of the original circular layout remain.
(I'm not making this up, I swear)

They're people. Different things affect different people differently and all that. Statistically speaking it's impossible to not have weird behavior because of how many humans there are on Earth.

Weird like a bunch of adults talking about My Little Pony?

That's weird to some people.

Its closer to 'grown men discussing MLP' weird rather than just simple adults...

Yeah, but I'm only doing it facetiously.
It's like doing it ironically, but in reverse. But remember that that is different than double irony, and that in turn is different from sincerity.

But Gelzo! Both Anon and Central are dash! You cannot ship someone with themselves!
Actually, wait...okay, it's way to late for that train of though not to go to bad places.

Oh God, how many times are people going to be asked to explain this?
I like My Little Pony because it's one of the cutest and funniest pieces of American animation I've seen in years. Which makes me happy because I'm usually off watching anime and hardly ever even feel like giving any stuff that would belong in this type of section any chance. MLP was just so awesome that it did that. I honestly don't see what people don't see in this show, because as soon as I saw it, I put down my anime and picked it up. Or at least, heard it was awesome. I mean, awesome new MLP series? I'm in! Of course, I grew up on the Toei G1 Anime of MLP anyway so I'm not most people.
It reminds me of my inner childhood with it's bright colours and things. I mean, it's no more for kids than Pokemon. It's a bright and beautiful place. Then all the characters are interesting. Then in the animation, everything is drawn really well, or at least most things such as landscape areas are simple, yet beautiful. And the character animation is really amazing, they pay a lot of attention to detail with the eyes and so forth. They really do almost everything that makes anyone who remotely enjoys cute things enjoy the show. I mean, it's a very lovingly crafted cutesy show with a lot of adult appeal and references. Nothing in the show is bland, there's a vibrant variation of personalities which all get their chance to sing and show off in the most subtle of ways in a bright cute world.
If you wish to quickly view some of the highlights of the show and maybe some fan videos which encompass what some people like most about the series, here's a few.

Well, can you see it? It has characters dedicated to just about every endearing personality type. Including a hyperactive girl, a shy moe girl, a rowdy fun-loving tomboy, and they're all fun. Pinkie just makes most people smile with her Genki Girl and Cloud Cuckoo Lander nature. Pinkie Pie isn't even my favourite in this and I'm choosing to talk about her. She's an all around fun loving character. I've been told lately that humans are pretty instinctual, and I'm thinking there a Pinkie Pie instinct. You just love Pinkie Pie, because you have a human brain. And if you'll notice, amazingly, just for a show originally aimed to sell products, Friendship is Magic has some of the best musical numbers in all of animation. Full stop. And of course, a few scattered incredibly Epic moments. If you watch it and you read all that and you still don't get it, well, I'm sorry, you were just born with a different brain from us. And your cute and funny cortex is likely incredibly underdeveloped.
