Spoiler Warnings for the fanfic "Bittersweet"
Eh, to be honest this story gets
less sad the more I read it. I mean, the first chapter is a huge tear-jerker, but... well, it starts to feel "wrong."
Just for example: look at the scene between Applejack and Twilight Sparkle in part four. The idea for it worked, up until this part:
"Okay Applejack, I guess I'll go now..." Twilight said dejectedly. However, before she even took two steps, a thought suddenly surfaced in her mind. "Wait a minute... Big Mac said it was a slow day today!"
We then have paragraphs upon paragraphs of Twilight pointing out the holes in Applejack's story, which leads to Applejack becoming annoyed—and frankly I sympathized, since Twilight seemed to have developed an inexplicable case of Asperger's Syndrome.
To better show you where I'm coming from, here's how
I would've done it:
"Okay Applejack. I guess... I'll go now." Twilight turned and began to walk away, but before she had even walked two steps she turned back. "Actually, there is
something I need."
"And what is that?"
"A shoulder."
Applejack looked at Twilight, confused at first. But the water in Twilight's eyes made her meaning clear, and Applejack noticed her own vision getting blurry too. Well, a shoulder was asked, a shoulder would be provided.
She wanted to say all those kind, motherly things. All the "there there, it'll be all right"s of the world. But Applejack found her throat too choked up to say anything. So she just pat her friend on the back, and let her shoulder soak up some saltwater. Applejack never noticed when she, herself, began to cry.
Another character whose portrayal bugs me is Fluttershy. The fic basically says "Fluttershy isn't perturbed at all because she's experienced death before and knows how to handle it, " which... well, frankly that's just cheap. Death of loved ones is death of loved ones and it
always hits you hard, no matter how many times you've been through it. I can't imagine Fluttershy being as unaffected as she is.
Rarity and Rainbow Dash are pretty believable though.
EDIT: Yeah... I just stopped reading. Part five was a deal-breaker because all the sudden it turns into an action-adventure story.
I like the Alternate Ending though.
