It's also an issue with attitude as well. NMM never ACTED like she was the one in charge. Well, she did, but to me at least she came off as sounding rather needy and insecure. I never once bought her as a massive threat.

Discord WAS in charge, KNEW he was in charge, and ACTED like he was in charge.

this is probably all YMMV though XD

I like to think that this episodes weirdness can be at least partially attributed to the writer.

I'd say the intent behind their bragging was a lot different. They weren't bragging because THEY wanted to show off. They were testing to see how well Dash dealt with others finding TMMDW awesome (part of the moral they wanted to teach her was that you should react with humility even when someone else outshines you). There was a motive behind the bragging other than pure egotism.

Don't worry Dashie, we still like you, it's just that sometimes Charisma grows too big so it needs to be broken down before it causes trouble.

I actually thought it was a pretty good episode as far as Rainbow Dash went. She started out surprisingly humble, only got into the bragging after massive support for it, spent the entire episode trying to do good deeds while having her identity systematically dismantled, and at the end of it didn't do anything particularly awful at the breaking point before or after the reveal. She comes across, imho, as far more likable in this episode than in the pet race one.

The rest of the cast was a bit dickish, though. Going to all that trouble to specifically mess with your friend's head to teach her a lesson... instead of just TALKING to her about it... is rather creepy. It wouldn't have come off as so bad if it had turned out to be a last resort plan after Dash had blown off every other attempt to fix her egotism.

I've never really seen a MLP episode that I outright disliked, and this is no exception. But it's difficulty in the 'as much flawed as good' bin.
