Nightmare Moon didn't really do anything. She was never a ridiculously massive threat, because Celestia already had a plan in place to take care of her (as opposed to Discord, who completely blindsided her)

None of her schemes worked. I like my villains competent

I'm not sure what is better.

I liked both of them too (mainly because I find Luna's fall so fascinating) but I prefer Discord by quite a fair bit because I LOVED his competence

Although now that I think about it Discord is much stronger and much more competent than NMM, on screen that is.

Both understood that to win they need to get rid of ponies' elements of harmony.

Except NMM just tried temptation (Good job making your entire plan rest upon whether the element of loyalty betrays your friends), and Discord made their elements of harmony turn on themselves (You are the element of laughter? How do you like being the laughing stock), and not only that: he straight up forcefully brainwashed Fluttershy. What the hell? She resisted the temptation!

Nightmare Moon was a larger threat. If Nightmare Moon won everything would die, if Discord had won then life would be pretty bad but it would continue.

Technically, he hypnotized all of them. (Notice the swirly eyes). Those moments before he corrupted them were PURELY for his own satisfaction. He wanted to see them suffer

Yeah, I didn't say competent ALL the time. I meant that he actually WON against them for a while, and did it quite effortlessly as well

The keyword is "if".

NMM won once for some time and it's not like everyone died. Discord effortlessly won onscreen and only lost because Twilight is overpowered.

What I learned today is that I kick flank at brainwashing.

Well, he managed to hypnotize all of them when they were in doubt. As in, he discorded (is that a word?) AJ by making her believe lie is better than truth, and so on.

However, Fluttershy resisted the temptation, and it would be great to see her save the day as a twist.

But that would imply she's better than everypony else and would make miss out on the asshole!Fluttershy, so it's all in good fun.

Five reasons Nightmare Moon is better than Discord:

1. She has an actual motivation. Discord is basically a glorified prankster.

2. That mane.

3. When she realized Plan A ("keep them from finding the Elements of Harmony") had failed she had the presence of mine to try and actually destroy said Elements. Discord? Hides them and then straight-up tells Twilight Sparkle where they are.

4. Nightmare Moon's story actually went somewhere and led to a permanent change of status quo. Discord's story basically revolved around them trying to press a reset button.

5. Without Nightmare Moon, we would not have had "Luna Eclipsed." Or for that matter, Luna.

Okay, some of those points may be sketchy but its hard to argue with the second one, innit? :P

Celestia herself mentions that she's no match for him without the elements. She probably knew that Discord wouldn't take the mane cast seriously as a threat, and would opt to corrupt them, rather than flat out kill them. Discord was actively trying to prove Celestia wrong (Discord rules, Celestia drools), he was playing a game with her. If Celestia joined then Discord might have chosen to kill them outright and save himself the trouble. She needed to play along with him to SOME extent

but people found Discord entertaining. Entertainment goes a long way, besides, just because the EPISODE in which he appeared was inferior doesn't mean that he as a VILLAIN is inferior

She also only smashes the elements after finding out that they "Don't work"

That mane is the best mane.

Without the Elements nopony is ever a match for Nightmare Moon. From what we know of the origin story, Nightmare Moon kept the land in eternal darkness until Celestia used the Elements and then when she comes back she incapacitates Celestia in seconds.

Just you wait until S3, when he gets unstoned again and becomes the main character.

She intended to smash them the whole time, but Twilight's presence distracted her.

Also, NM was never in control for the ENTIRETY of the pilot. Every obstacle she threw at the mane cast was neatly countered without too much hassle. She ended up HELPING the mane cast discover their elements (at least it was part of Discord's plan all along that the mane cast would get the elements back, it was a sign that he'd won, and that the elements would NEVER pose a threat to him again).

The only time she had the upper hand was when Twilight failed to use the elements, but even then that wasn't because of something SHE did, and that problem is solved in about a minute as well. Her "smashing" the elements was also pointless.

Discord actually gave the mane cast a problem that they were honestly stumped by for a CONSIDERABLE amount of time
