Peeler is a (very) old fashioned word used to describe a patrol officer in Britian. It's named after the Home Secretery who created the London Metropolitian Police in 1829, the first civilian police force of the type that we would now be familiar with...Sir Robert
Peel.
Peeler eventually gave way to
Bobbie in the mid 19th century, around about the same time they adopted their famous helmets (which took around
34 years to appear!) However, here in Northern Ireland where I live, police are still called Peelers to this day.
At this stage, I would like to point out that the Police Service Of N.I is
nothing like the English, Scottish or Welsh police. Unlike the unarmed bobbies of the mainland, peelers are
very heavy armed and patrol the streets in 6 ton armour plated land rovers.
