I thought you guys were more British than American-influenced.
This is complicated to answer.
Our lexicon is closer to the British one than the American one, but includes some American words that aren't British and some words that neiter of you have.The more stable parts of our culture hav more British influences, but we're a real hodge-podge. Our
popular culture is more American influenced and we become
more American inluenced with each generation and this affects our lexicon as well.
Biggest illustration.
In Britain, a "cookie" is what Americans would call a "cupcake".
In America, a "cookie" is what the British would call a "biscuit".
In South Africa, a "cookie" has the British definition for my parents' generation and for my own, it basically has the American definition but is a bit more
specific. We would say, "A cookie is a type of biscuit."
