I'm still struggling to find good magic for Fancy Free too. A good single spell that sums him up. It's pretty hard.

I don't have a problem with the Hardboiled part of the name. I've got a little familiarity with Film Noir and crime fiction, so when you say "hardboiled" I say "detective".

But mashing Sweet onto the end sounds a little weird.

Hardboiled Sweets are a thing though. So I totally see it working.

@ Bad: It's kind of an obscure reference, though. You seem to be the only one who "got" it.

They're pretty common. Am I the only one who's had things like these?◊

Oh hey, you guys will like this too. I'm currently working on the baddies. Pirates!

I had an idea for a pirate captain named Black Bess (after Dick Turpin's horse) but I can't decide if she should be a high level enemy (a pirate princess equivalent to a crime lord) or a low ranking reoccurring rival the equal of fancy free.

Her crew though, heh heh heh. A good excuse to do my own versions of the elements of disharmony. Although that might be too predictable now.

@Bad: I've never heard of it. The only things I've ever heard "hardboiled" used to describe are eggs and private detectives. Even if "hardboiled sweets" are a thing, they seem to be uncommon enough that most people wouldn't get the reference.

Hardboiled sweets are what you Yankees call hard candy.

@Bad: I always thought those called just boiled sweets?

I just plugged "hardboiled" into Google, and the first five pages have no mention of candy. It's almost all eggs, the "devoid of sentimentality" adjective, or the John Woo movie.

Yeah, those are just "hard candy" here. I would never have associated those with boiling.

Well believe it or not, he's a bit like Fluttershy! Bad with ponies, good with animals. Except whereas Flutters was shy, he's surly. He just can't abide other ponies. They annoy the hell out of him. So in a way, a good counterpart to Pinkie too.

But it's just a name really atm.

I don't even know what hard candy is. I only ever heard about it from Counting Crows. (And now here.)

Hardboiled Sweet would be a good name for a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.

It's not particularly creative, but what if you just named him Softboiled? Like a play on him hard boiled nature, but also his softer(?) side with animals.

Say, now that we know how Alicorns are made, who's to say you have to be Good? I think that even bad ponies can have strong friendships, and it could be possible for a bad pony to become an alicorn. Which if I do right, I could make Black Bess an alicorn. Same age bracket as Cadence, powers similar to Sombra but with a personality similar to a 'bad' Rarity? Hard to say, but I wouldn't mind an evil sorceress leading the pirate nation. Will actually, not so much evil as a really bad jerkass, considering the setting.

Jolly Rancher? Sounds E Pish to me.

Or rock candy.

I don't know, I tend to like names derived from expressions. In this case, sweet and sour grapes.

I knew what hardboiled sweets were.

Admittedly, that's mainly because we South Africans tend to pick up on some American and Brtish terms even if we don't use them ourselves though.

I thought you guys were more British than American-influenced.

I frigging love boiled sweets.

@Apple: I like the idea of a villain having True Companions. Like a nega version of the heroes or something. Though some would complain at the idea of an alicorn, but I say do what you feel works.

I could do just a normal unicorn. Alicorn would be cool though...

Maybe a unicorn with that wing spell/robot wings?

Thanks to the show, my mind is conditioned to think of alicorns as royalty.
