I don't think Changelings can change the form that much (thoguh I haven't read the comics)

Comics confirm they can turn into animals. Guidebook confirms that that their insectoid appearance is a conscious decision and they can look like whatever they want.

Killing changelings with bug-spray always sounded cruel to me.

I'm slightly convinced that changelings are actually lich of some kind. Like anypony drained of love wither and become part of the hive.
