Isn't there a trope for that? Where a character goes to another world or back in time and has a romance with someone, and then when they come back there's a copy of that person that they can have a relationship with despite it not actually being the same person? That trope has always really bugged me.

I've...seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. C-beams, glittering over the Tannhäuser Gate. All those...moments...will be lost...like memories in rain. Time...to die.
