Speaking of pets, anyone ever have a hermit crab? I once was looking after someone's pets, and their crab escaped overnight (fortunately, I managed to find it hiding in the corner one room over). I left the top of the cage off because I didn't realize it would be able to climb out.

Alrighty.

Back in the Age Of The Three Tribes, the griffons were barbarian vassals to the Pegasi, who brought them under their wings (not necessarily voluntary) and installed their culture into them. When the Pegasi began their long migration to the lands that would eventually become Equestria, the griffon tribes were left behind to fend for themselves. Beginning as separate kingdoms hostile to one another, the fledgling civilizations struggled in the frozen landscape, but as time past the lands thawed, and the griffons flourished. Eventually, the four kingdoms (expies of France, Spain, Austria and Italy) united into the Griffon Empire. Possessing no real magic of their own, they instead turned to technology. Today, they are one of the most powerful nations on the planet, who's vast trading networks protected by mighty armies and navies wielding advanced weaponry bring in untold wealth.

So what do you think? They have touches of Rome, Byzantine, renaissance and early modern Europe about them. When I say advanced technology, it's all steam and clock punk. Think Leonardo Da Vinci...who btw will feature as a griffon in some shape. And they generally share tribal era Pegasi values...that 'might is right' and that if you want something, take it. They aren't evil...but they aren't exactly ll good either.

Hmmm, I dunno, Gryphons in general don't seem to have much to do with the ponies.

I was kinda drawn towards the civilisation style of another fanfic's Gryphons, who culturally have two social groups styles, the creche (family/nest, Eagle style) and the Pride (hunting packs, Lion style). They have a predatorial outlook on life, although they have reasonably good relations with the ponies.

[up][up]Sounds workable, although I personally wouldn't lean too hard on the technology myself. If it gets too advanced in terms of industrialization it might feel out of place in the setting. Then again, FIM runs on Schizo Tech anyway.

I personally imagine the Gryphons having a kind of hybrid Barbarian styling, utilizing the bones and bits of their prey in their things. City Gryphons are a bit more like the old-era Classical empires compared to their rural-tribal country cousins.

I'd always imagined them as viking-like myself, although Gustav shows that if anything they'd be French.

If anyone plays Warhammer Fantasy, these guys are The Empire, with Spanish, French and Italian influences in addition to Prussian ones. Overall, they're a bit like the UK too...four countries, one nation as it were.

The griffins might all live on very high mountaintops, higher than Cloudsdale, even. It would explain why we see so few of them.

@Apple: They should have a Unification Myth of their own about how a hero or a band of heroes united the Prides and the Creches into a single Empire to defeat some Ancient Evil that threatened their land.

Hey do you think Hippogriff would be a good nickname for RD/Gilda?

Awww. :(

I like Dash's voice. ....but then, I like the voices of tomboys in anime in general. Pinkie Pie's voice is nearly always on a sugar-high. The other voices sound like the same actress doing impersonations of other people.

... how come the pony's names show up on-screen when they introduce themselves? They already appear on the ED! Did they think little kids would have a hard time remembering them?

How come the words "pony" and "Princess" aren't translated? They DO have words for those, right?

Hey do you think Hippogriff would be a good nickname for RD/Gilda?

No. Hippogriff is a good name or the race of equines with eagle fronts.

@Applelight: Yeah, too high tech would seem out of place. We know they have at least some magic anyway. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to fly or cloudwalk. And Gilda would never be able to race Dash. And as said, it seems that ponies don't have lot of contct with gryphons, t least today. Otherwise seems okay.

@Kyun: Probably, yeah. Or just how to spell them; transliteration can be hard.

Also, Dash's voice is interesting, yeah.

Well, for 'pony' and 'princess', you could say that neither the show's concept of ponies nor their concept of Princesses are really what you'd expect from the words, and wouldn't necessarily map well onto the Japanese words.
