I thought "Double Rainboom" was good, in a trippy kind of way.

Most of the counter stuff is pretty good though. They're going the "If you don't like it, do one yourself" route.

Watching Double Rainboom now. At the ~5 minute mark. The animation is very good, but it doesn't seem quite like show quality. It feels... jittery. Like each individual frame is spot on, but they don't always flow quite well. The Trollface cloud is very much forced. The plot is... something I could kinda see the show doing, but it seems a little lackluster. The voices themselves are good, but editing between lines is a bit choppy at some points and it doesn't always feel like a natural conversation because there are irregular pauses. The music is spot on. Resuming watch.

@JT: I reckon the Double Rainboom crew didn't learn what the Children of the Night crew did and have more tweening in there than should be, the CotN crew do all inbetweens and eschew tweening now and it looks waaaaaaay smoother. Case in point:

[up]That's definitely a part of it, but that's not the only thing. I think it's that the body language is a bit off; there's quite a bit of Milking the Giant Cow going on. Even before anything happens, Twilight is flailing her legs and stuff when in the show itself they usually have to build up to that point.

Anyway, 10 minute mark now. I love the alternate animation bit. The animation is really smooth and it has plenty of good sight gags (love Rarity putting the umbrella in the potion and Fluttershy getting smushed by a whale). The timing in the lines are still off, though, an there are a lot of individual shots that go on for a second or two longer than required, and it really throws off the overall feel. That said, I like RD and Twilight's interactions while Twilight is trying to test everything.

Well how would this compare to Snowdrop?. To give some points:

Snowdrop: Inspirationally Disadvantaged, Just So Story, The Woobie/Mary Sue (depending on view) Double Rainboom: Ascended Meme/Forced Meme/Discredited Meme (depending on opinion), Reference Overdosed, Crossover, Hype Backlash (regarding the 100% Show-accurate thing at least)

Okay at about 15 minutes now. The section with Dash wreaking havoc through town is pretty good, although some of the gags are hit or miss. The AJ, Rarity, and Fluttershy ones are great, the Scootaloo chicken joke is a bit iffy (it makes no sense if you don't know the meme), and the pinball gag is funny, but doesn't feel like something the show would normally do. The Derpy gag is good, but gets dragged out for about twice as long as it needed to.

The Double Rainboom itself is really cool, although the buildup is a bit long, and it's the most blatant Title Drop ever. But yeah, looks really awesome.

wow, sure is a lot of backlash against double rainboom. saw it myself, thought it was OK, but then I haven't been listening to the hype buildup the past however long it was in production.

As to Dusk's Dawn..... they tried, that's, really all I can say... they tried, give em a gold star for that.

I guess there's a reason noone ever talks about it.

Hit 20 minutes. I have to say, I actually think the animators did a way better job imitating the PPG than they did with MLP. Dash doesn't quite mesh with the setting quite as well as they probably hoped, but for the most part it works pretty well. The scene of Dash talking to the monster feels weird though; she basically turns into Fluttershy for a minute or so.

[up][up]Yeah, it just looks like they took figures from the OC Pony Creator and animated them.

I don't usually watch fanfilms mainly do to the fear that the voices don't mach the personalities right, sort of a only the official VAs can convey their personalities right. That fact alone was the reason I decided to try out Snowdrop (It was mostly O Cs with only the princesses as cameos). I was impressed by the voice acting for the Princesses in that and mostly the voice acting in Double Rainboom. (That reminds me: should we move the namespace of Double Rainboom to Web Video?)

I personally loved Double Rainboom. I'll admit that it had some problems {Not much of a plot, the Roid Rage gag came out of nowhere}, but all the sight gags, the interactions between RD and Twilight at the beggining and the funny unexpected crossover made up for those in my personal opinon.

Also, I find it funny how Double Rainboom had way more Derpy in it then most of S3 did.tongue

Yeah it was fun to see rainbow dash in Townsville. Makes you wonder what would happen if Twilight and friends wound up there.

Yeah I loved it, it wasn't perfect, but it was DAMN good. The PPG part kind of went on way to long, and wish it was a much smaller part of the whole thing. but loved the first half. Yeah it could use some polish still, and some of the jokes felt a bit forced, but on the whole. It was freaking great.

Finished it. My overall thoughts are that it was very good for what it was: an elaborate fan video. If they were going for professional quality, though, I honestly can't say they made it. There was a real over-reliance on gags in flavor of any sort of plot or characterization, and most of the gags were more of "Hey, look, a reference!" rather than the character based humor that drew me to the show in the first place. There were also a lot of flow issues; there were dozens of shots that lasted just a second or two too long and made it look like someone forgot to move the camera. Some of the gags were dragged out for too long as well. Case in point, the Derpy gag was amusing, but could have easily been edited down to half the time without losing the joke. The ending was a complete Deus ex Machina.

On the positive side, for the most part the animation was solid, and the brief interactions with the Powerpuff Girls were honestly the best part of the episode for me because it felt like they were just having fun rather than trying to imitate the show. The music was great, and the voices, while not perfect, were a lot better than I had expected fan voices to be.

TL;DR version: as a fan video it's very impressive, as an episode I found it lackluster. I'd watch it again, but I honestly wouldn't compare it to any episodes of the actual show.

[up]There are actually several screenshots Although I don't think most of them are of the It Makes Sense in Context Les Yay variety.
