@JT: Yeah, I think they could have managed expectations a bit more if they hadn't called it a 'episode'. That just makes people want something on-par with the show.

@JT Here's the link. I was wondering if anyone would compare and contrast the two?

[up] Maybe if they said it was as long as an episode, expectations wouldn't be that high. Sturgeon's Law+Hype Backlash+ actually high quality work=the general opinion being So Okay It's Average. And possibly a Broken Base.

@Ed: Honestly, that's most of the reason. I heard a ton of stuff about how they were going to all this trouble to make an episode that could match the canon ones, and needless to say, while they did well, they didn't hit that mark by a longshot, even discounting the crossover stuff.

[up]Read the trope page, not really my thing. Never cared for stuff about OC's, or that focus too much on worldbuilding type stuff. I vastly prefer things that deal with the actual cast.

Which honestly was probably my biggest disappointment with Double Rainboom; the bit at the beginning with Twilight and RD had some nice interaction, but nearly the entire rest of the episode was just gags.

Well, at least this proves that with enough hard work, fans can do awesome stuff if they put their talents to good use. Just gives me more respect for the animation staff on doing what they do, animation errors aside.

Of course I can barely see any of it, but with enough rewatches and general commentary I can get an idea.

Am I the only one who wasn't surprised at the crossover?

[up]Depends. Were you the only one who noticed that the creators have permission slips from Cartoon Network?

Can't say I ever saw those. However, I do recall seeing a trailer for Double Rainboom some time ago which had a shot of Pinkie pulling Dash through a portal, so I figured there was some sort of dimension-hopping in there somewhere.

[up][up] Ah. What are your thoughts on Double Rainboom in comparison to Snowdrop?

[up] I'm just curious on what the opinion on both vids are is all.

Well, I guess when you already have a title based on a meme, having it consist of mostly gags and references is not surprising.

Or at least it would have been if the creators hadn't (apparently) made a big deal about wanting it to be close to an actual episode of the show, but I guess that wouldn't have gotten as much attention or as strong a response.

I think they could have managed expectations a bit more if they hadn't called it a 'episode'. That just makes people want something on-par with the show.

I remember when people were complaining about the trollface in the preview storyboarding, and suggested it might just be a placeholder.

Well, I did find the non-pony memes a tad annoying. But was fine with most of the pony ones. As to compareing it to Snowdrop....

Apples and Oranges, they are really just so different. And yet, if I'd have to compare. Snowdrop felt a tad rushed, and could have stood to be longer and flesh more out, rainboom actually felt rather slow in places and like it was a tad more drawn out then it needed to be.

For both, the single greatest, and most spot on thing was the music. Story wise, no comparison, one's an emotional, feeling filled drama, the other is a comedy.

I do think that they over played the "It could be an episode of the show" angle to much. As a fanwork goes, they were both brilliant, and well done. I can't even say which i like more. Both gave me feels, just different ones.

Also, I got IDW issue 5 in the mail (since my order went through before I cancelled my subscription) and Katie Cook has done it again! Seriously, she has some major talent.
Friendship is Magic #5-8's Story Arc is written by Heather Nuhfer (with art by Amy Mebberson) rather than by Katie Cook (with art by Andy Price).

@ Seraph Thank you for responding to my comparison request. I honestly feel that MLP Fan Vids of signifigant quality tend to be polarising recently. example opinions (That are not my own):

Snowdrop: Double Rainboom:

Remember that none of these are opinions I express but were used to illustrate how shattered the base seem to be in regards to Fan Films. My opinion on both were "meh" at worst (at least Zachery's crew managed to make "show-quality animation")

You forgot Picture Perfect Pony. If you ignore the O Cs, then it could be an actual song from the show.

Speaking of fan videos, the Fan Film page just led me to this, which appears to be trying to fufill every single stereotype about German being harsh and gutteral. Unfortunately, the voice makes it almost imposible to understand.

I never went into "Double Rainboom" expecting something of show quality. I took it for what it was: A fan project. Did they go overboard with the sight gags and references? Yes. I also agree with those who wanted more characterization, and I thought Twilight having a full-blown science lab in her library was just weird. As a fan-made episode, though, I found it enjoyable.
