Perhaps Alicorns cant wield the Elements? Maybe Celestia WASNT an Alicorn the first time she used them on Discord... and that's how she (and possibly Luna ascended). That is why she had to have Twilight and her friends take them on?

Twilight can no longer be the element of Magic... so this Sunset Shimmer is the new Magic element?

Considering Celestia's plans and tests for Twilight, I can't imagine that she would take on other students and not also give them similar tests. Tests that they apparently failed.

I could easily see Sunset being kinda like Lighting Dust. A reflection of what could have been had Twilight's character taken a turn for the worst.

I've actually been hoping for something like this - seeing one of Celestia's previous students - since season one. If Twilight is her most faithful one, then surely there have been some that haven't been faithful? I've been thinking all along that it would be interesting to see someone who flunked out or failed Celestia. At first I thought Trixie might fill that role, or Sombra in his backstory. I'm perfectly okay with a new character exploring these possibilities, especially since it might be used to further characterize and give screentime to Celly.

Well the box didn't say she would be a new mane character. She could be a minor character like Lightning Dust or Babs Seed.

THAT could be interesting. Hope she shows up and we get more elaboration on that.

Im like 80% positive she is going to be a MC since she showed up as a Masquerade toy along with the other M6 characters.

To my earlier post, it wasn't that I was saying that season 4 wasn't already interesting, what with Princess Twilight and all that now. I meant that it's even moreinteresting now that we have this pony.

Also I sent Coconut to the gym and the barbers◊. I think I'm going in a better direction with his mane and tail, and I think he suits the new physique.

Yeah, that looks better, Apple. I think his hair could maybe look like palm leaves, just like as a joke, but other than that he looks good ^^

I'm kind of hoping she's just another student at Celestia's school. I mean presumably they all have some degree of contact with the big lady, and Twilight's probably not her first or last protege, but we don't really need Sunset being another "btw Twilight has a brother".

I kind of hope she doesn't become a recurring character. While I'm not against the idea of adding to the cast, I'd like any potential addition to not be just Twilight Mk 2. And yeah, just because they were both students of Celestia doesn't mean they're at all similar, but I'd still rather they pick somepony with a completely different background. Personally I'm still holding out for Twi to get a batpony guard.

@Kyler; That Sunset Shimmer toy now has a description saying she's a former student of Celestia, implying she's more important than just some random toy pony.

Her name is Sunset Shimmer. She was a student of Celestia (emphasis on was). Celestia controls the sun.

Sunset Shimmer either failed in her studies, or turned to the dark side, or turned to the dark side because she failed in her studies.

I still think she's going to be the replacement element of magic since Alicorns cant wield elements.

Well when if comes to picking students Celestia sure does have a thing for theme naming. When do we meet her next student Dawn Glisten?

I have a better name: Dawn Treader!

Celestia eventually sends her off on a voyage because she's learned all she can from her.

What I'd like them to do is have her be recurring, but not necessarily a primary character. Kinda like the Gala subplot only in character form. Pops up multiple times over the course of the season, but isn't a constant presence. Ends up building up as it goes and finishes up in the finale.

On the flipside, I'd kinda like to see her as a non-antagonistic foil to Twilight. I.e. kinda like a Friendly Rival rather than a "bad" version of her. Granted, Trixie kinda already fits that, but it would still be interesting to see Celestia's other students.

@Applelight: His mane looks a bit...fuzzy now. It takes away from the "looks like a palm tree" bit.
